I recently learned that you say something like "inf, innit?", but "fine, aight!" These are almost the same words, but they contradict each other. It's a pair, so to say. Why are they pronounced so differently? :~ Another weird one like that, with very different meanings though, are tome and epitome. Only learned that relatively recently too :~ English is weird. What probably doesn't help is that among developers, especially young developers, there is a certain mindset. Burning midnight oil, working stupid hours, often unpaid, is considered some sort of flex. I see this in corporate environments as well: the people most likely to burn out are those who do not set boundaries and want to solve everything / feel responsible for everything. The people most likely to last are the ones who like their job but at the end of their shift say: the rest can wait till tomorrow.

Don't know (and IDC) about plugin into any development system, but for years, I am using PsPad as my go-to plain text editor on Windows, and it has a function to remove blanks lines (and many other options)...

I would replace the drives with large ones, copy the data over and destroy the old drives. I just use my drill press to drill a couple of holes down through the platters. Our hazard waste site has a bin for electronic waste (big sign: "No Scavenging"). Have to remember to take my old batch of 5 1/4" diskettes with me next time. >64 There is never enough time to do it right, but there is enough time to do it over.

"Appliance" is not a bad term. And you're absolutely 100% correct. How you use a "general use" PC evolves over time. With few exceptions, *most* of my systems might be considered mere appliances, as you put it. The exception might be the PC on my desk. It's used primarily to RDP into other systems elsewhere, and general browsing locally. And "browsing" today is nothing alike browsing even just a few years ago. I have an aunt who - poor her - only "browses the net and plays games on Facebook", with a Windows 7 laptop with 1GB of RAM. I don't know how she can tolerate that. I would imagine it might not have been all that bad initially, but nowadays, a browser - any browser - sharing 1GB of RAM with an entire OS - is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure she just spends less and less time on it over time.

Interesting view. At least for books (printed) in the US it is well established that lending a book to another is fair use. It is similar to lending someone a screw driver. Same issue arose when places started renting movies on tape/dvd. In the US that was settled by requiring that stores purchase it at a much higher price. Depending on what period of time one looks at newspapers (printed) they vary making money from actually buying the paper, to ramping up on advertising revenue and then now, at least in the US for most major papers, trying to squeeze every penny out of diminishing readership. Certainly for much of that time reading it in a library was not considered a problem that I ever heard about. The ads that were not in the inserts were still there. I have read newspapers in a library - I cannot recall ever seeing inserts. Microfiche newspapers also contained the ads. But one could suppose the sale price no longer applied.

Actually, if g(p) returns void, then this is definitely allowed. Makes generic programming easier, with less boilerplate, and faster compilation. Not sure what is supposed to happen if g(p) is something other than void - it should really be a syntax error.

It's likely that the firewalls in most routers are not that sophisticate that they can detect and exclude a subset of ip addresses from within a given set of the same in building default forwarding rules.

oh it gets better. So one part of my solution has a project with 15 subprojects. If I build each subproject separately, no errors. Build the project as a whole? Nope, issues out the kazoo. I feel I'm getting closer though. I have 10 years at least each in Java, C# and C++. There is nothing wrong with Java. Nor with the other two. What you are describing is what I would generally diagnose as an environment problem. But could be a data caused problem in that a message(s)/request(s) that should have run to completion did not and now it is just spinning. Restarting it would likely demonstrate that. That however would also indicate a likely programming bug. Sufficient execution flow logging, in any type of server application, would allow you to diagnose execution flows running out of control.

I am giving you credit for funding it. I have 3 variations of hash functions and it's the best so far. One day I will post them, but too much going on here.
