New RCA L40FHD41 LCD TV

When our DLP TV's lamp went out yesterday, my wife decided (without any prompting from me) to get a new LCD TV for the bedroom, along with an upscaling DVD player. Since I am in the process of becoming deathly ill, I sent her out and had her call me so I could research the equipment on the web that she was considering for purchase. The wife brought home a RCA L40FHD41, and when we set it up, we found the following: 0) Price - $548 (at Wal-Mart) - that's damn good for such a large (40-inch) LCD TV. 1) The TV's setup functionality is basically crap. There is a Menu button on the remote, and this allows you to go through some setup stuff. This setup stuff does NOT include the screen format ((how wide the incoming display signal is). For that setting, you have to click the Format button. I still don't know if it's going to auto-adjust depending on the signal, or if we're going to have to do that manually. 2) There is no way to remove unused sources from the Input menu. To watch a DVD, we have to scroll down SEVEN items to get to "HDMI 1". I would have alternately settled for being able to configure the list so that the things we use are right next to each other, but that's not possible either. Also, if you're at the top of the list, you can't push the UP button and go to the bottom (the menu doesn't wrap). 3) The DirecTV remote (and from what I gather, MANY/ALL generic learning remotes) are not compatible with the TV. The codes provided by DirecTV simply don't work, and using their "search for codes" feature (or web page) doesn't contain anything that will work. This means we need the DirecTV remote to turn on the satellite box and change channels, but the TV's remote for power/sound. What a pain. 4) I told my wife that we would get a better picture if we got a HD satellite box, and she said we could wait for a while, and I agreed. Then, she saw the picture (we were watching Discovery Channel, which is available in HD). Her exact comment was "What good is it to get a 40-inch TV if we're not gonna have a 40-inch picture?". We'll be getting a HD satellite box next week. :)

I feel your pain. The 'universality' of most remote controls lacks a lot of 'uni'. I managed to a find a remote that handles our cable box and TV together. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to work with the DVD player (even though the model is listed in the remote's code list). Given that remote controls have a lifetime measured in a handful of months* in my house, I'm not about to shell out more than $25 or so for an expensive remote control. * My wife tends to drop them on the hardwood floor. A lot.

I have the same problem. She always leaves the remote on the back of the couch, and the cats inevitably knock it off onto the floor. It's gotten to be habit with me that when I walk through the living room, I knock the remote off the back of the couch and onto the seat as I pass by. And without fail, I'll find it on the back of the couch again the next time I cruise through. :rolleyes:

You mean these[^]? Strike 1: Their stupid web site sizes itself to approximately 200% of the width of my screen. Strike 2: Their cheapest model is $99.95. Given that my wife destroys remotes in amount of time indirectly proportional to either their (A) price or (B) difficulty of replacement, I'm not willing to spend more than about $25-$35 for a remote control. Strike 3: Strike 1 really pisses me off. I had to set the IE page zoom to 50% to be able to see the whole thing, at which point I could no longer read the text. Morons.

It takes forever to update the remote with your configuration, and nine times out of ten, you've done something wrong and have to go through the entrie thing all over again. Oh yeah, their remote isn't aware that there are two HDMI inputs on my DLP TV.

ever try the Logitech universal remotes ? i've never run into anything mine can't handle (even though i've had to manually 'train' it on a couple of things).
Best remotes on the planet. I swapped my 5 remotes for a Harmony about 6 years ago and I'll never go back. It was the first time I could really put the others away and never need them. On top of the awesome functionality (pressing "Watch TV" or "Watch DVD" rather than having to switch all the equipment individually) it's practically indestructable. I've always had a habit of throwing things and this remote has been to the ceiling thousands of times along with a few trips down the stairs, floor, railing, wall etc. when I get distracted and miss catching it. I agree with you. I have one of those remotes, and they work great. The few times an odd device isn't part of the collective database, you can always train it yourself without much hassle. The only thing I have to complain about is their software for managing the remote. The software is shaky at best...
