Hello All, Anybody have any insights into what companies charge these days? I usually just install Joomla or Drupal and work on a template for them and deploy to a LAMP but lately seem to be growing beyond that. D

$250. If you charge any more they will complain that they can get someone from India to do it. Charge any less and they will think you are cheating them and getting someone from India to do it. I quote hourly and not by project so I never get web design work anyway but the above magic number seem to be what most of my potential clients expect to pay.

Yeah, I had one guy come up to me and say $500 and not a penny more. You can wind up spending a couple of months on even a simple site if they don't know what they want and you have to flounder around trying different things so it was like fougeddabouddit.

Listen to the man. Unless it's a big project requiring some actual skill, the customer already has this mindset just as Ray describes. Just act like you don't "need" the work - here to help, nothing to see, move along, move along. It just isn't worth the headache.

Ennis, I was going to reply to that one - you literally took the words out of my mouth on that one - no need for redundancy :) I had someone approach me once - they wanted a full blown accounting package very specific to their business. They were willing to pay no more than 300 for development - after all - they reasoned they could get an accounting package from a store for cheaper... So I sent them to the store.... Rene.
