Yeah, I heard about these a well, but I think these have been there since NT 3.x (maybe i'm wrong). Those eggs you described are associated with the screen savers and not the OS itself. I guess there aren't any. Thanks, Jignes

    >> If you know where it is suppoosed to be.. << Trust me, you don't want to go there.... PL/I has the annoying behavior of whenever it finds an error, it would print an error message, and then GUESS at what it though you meant. It almost always guessed wrong. Anyway, what would you WANT it to do? Just silently ignore the error? But what if it's guess is not what you actually wanted. (Using an undecalred datat type will erroneously give you that message). Should it get an error, but continue? But then, your correctly working program would still produce dozens of errors. You'll have to fix them eventually. Should it edit your source code? But again, what if it's view of the problem isn't the real trouble?

I looked all over for something like this for one of my applications. The only thing I found was the TxText control. I believe it is made in Germany, but is availalbe from Programmers Paradise. It is both a Rich Text and HTML editor and viewer. I believe it works as an OCX/DLL or such, and they have a nice trial version so you can play with it and see if it does what you want. It hasa lot of nice features, but of course it is complicated to use. However, an HTML editor is by it's nature complicated. It is also cheap and with no runtime royalties if I remember correctly. Just so you know, I wound up never using it. I left the functionality out of the app. Email me if you can't find it

Just tested out my cable connection at home. I got 1027 Kbps and 125.3 Kbytes/sec. I was also streaming audio at the same time ( sorry, I just can't turn off that radio :). I guess I'll have to wait to see how many of my neighbours sign up for cable before I start running around with my hedge clippers! Snip, Snip

Advertising is a funny thing. I'm sure most people get a ton of junk mail in their letter boxes, and many would wish their (snail) mail boxes weren't full of this crap day in, day out. However, what about the times when you get a catalogue from someone you are actually REALLY interested in (eg Gadgets R Us or something) - then it's great. Or what if there is a huge sale on stuff you actually want, and you don't get a catalogue and so miss out? Or again, what if there is a free offer on something you hadn't ever thought of using/buying? Then the ad is kinda useful. I think online ads are exactly the same - but with the added bonus that they never clog up your mail box. Maybe I'm strange but I actually like well targeted banner ads. From what I've been reading on some of the news feeds it actually looks like online advertising is increasing, not decreasing. It's certainly cheaper, and a lot easier to have it be seen by those who you feel would be interested. cheers, Chris Maunde

Paul wrote: With more and more life coming into the Linux community, it will become very difficult to justify any time on Windows. Interesting comment in hindsight - over 6 years on and Windows is still very strong. Vista is becoming available and a lot of people will be making the switch. I tried Linux a few months back and as far as I can see it still isn't suitable as a home or desktop system yet. I don't have the time to learn how to fiddle about with the settings in order to get something to work that just plugs and plays on Windows. I spent a fair few days trying to figure out how to get a network card to work before I gave up and reinstalled windows. Linux will improve, but it still has a long way to go before it becomes generally acceptable as a desktop operating system. I have to agree. Having used WAP devices, and spent some time learning the coding environment, I have to say it's pretty hard to understand how this is going to change the world of computing. I see WAP being used for notification and confirmation stuff mostly ("Your MSFT stock is at $90, do you wish to sell?" with a Yes/No selection available.) I get a headache when I think about typing in a search term into google using the number keys.. Arg. I see cell phones really being 2 way pagers until voice recognition really comes in, and despite all the advances there, it will still be years and years. Tablets, AutoPCs, etc., I can see that going, but WAP is too simple to make that really valuable. The cellphone as payment device idea is cool. You walk up to a Coke Machine, hold up your cell phone, it says "Would you like to transfer $.95 into this pop machine" Yes/No. That would be valuable, but lord knows how long that kind of infrastructure is from being available. Hmmm

George is walking on thin ice. If Eddie gets banished next week there goes George's alliance. George's paranoia and Teresa's banishcapades have made George very unpopular with the public.

First of all, MS didn't "try and fail" to convert Hotmail to Win2000. They just took their time making the switch over. *YOU* try to transfer 50 million email accounts to a different OS overnight (with no down time allowed). Further, note that FreeBSD couldn't handle the load either. Hotmail was running a version which they had heavily modified for that specific purpose. Now, to see that MSN, Hotmail and bCentral are all truly being run off Windows, all you have to do is look at the sites themselves. Every link is either an .ASP or a .DLL -- clearly indicatoring that they are running IIS. (OK, most of bCentrals links go to linkexchange.com, which is still FreeBSD, but that will probably change soon

According to Microsoft, "If the browser is HTTP 1.1 compliant (for example, Internet Explorer 3.x and later, or Netscape Navigator 3.x and later), the HTTP header contains the actual domain name requested. IIS uses this to determine which site should answer the request. " (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q190/0/08.ASP) For my own website (www.NJTheater.com), that would mean just 39 of the last 9266 visitors weren't using a browser good enough (ie, a 99.579% success rate)

Thanks Martin. Tom and I have known each other for nearly 3 years and he's a really nice guy. It's sometimes weird being on opposite sides of the fence, but we try and keep the "my site is better than yours!" emails we send to each other to a minimum :) Actually I think we mostly just tell each other how cool each other's sites are! cheers, Chris Maunde

Here's another one... ------------------------ What My Parents taught me... My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE - "If you're going to kill each other, do it outside - I just finished cleaning!" My mother taught me RELIGION - "You better pray that will come out of the carpet." My father taught me LOGIC: "Because I said so, that's why." My mother taught me FORESIGHT - "Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident." My father taught me IRONY - "Keep crying and I'll give you something to cry about." My father taught me about the science of OSMOSIS - "Shut your mouth and eat your supper!" My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM - "Will you look at the dirt on the back of your neck!" My mother taught me about STAMINA - "You'll sit there 'til alll that spinach is finished." My mother taught me about WEATHER - "It looks as if a tornado swept through your room." My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY - "If I've told you once, I've told you a million times - Don't Exaggerate!!!" My father taught me THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out." My mother taught me about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION - "Stop acting like your father!" My mother taught me about ENVY - "There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do!" I'd give proper attribution but I don't know who wrote it. I think it is time for Chicken George to go. He seems to be the least entertaining of them all now. Only problem is that with him gone, Cassandra will stand out too much and will probably be the next one
