http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4688810.stm[^] I bet the only reason that Tony wants the current situation to continute is because, without the Scottish and Welsh Labour MPs, he wouldn't have a majority anymore. It is crazy that the Scottish Alastiar Darling, Minister for Transport, whose consituency is in Edinburgh, dictates transport policy in England while it won't affect the people he actually represents as Transport is a devolved issue. Nothing he does in the role of Minister for Transport will affect his consituents unless they happen to travel into England.

It sucks. We need an English Parliament IMHO. English MPs don't get to vote on devolved matters in Scotland (which is as it should be) so it needs to work in both directions. However, as you point out, Labour is sunk without Scotland. If Scotland ever achieves full independence (and more power to them if they do - if I was Scottish, I'm pretty sure I'd want independence!) then the New Labour project will be over for good.

Surely it's all moot now that we're being sucked ever deeper into the EU? In any case, at present, Scotland wouldn't last 5 minutes without the heavy subsidies that England bestows upon it and which means that the taxes I pay for services in London get spent on some haggis-munching, skirt wearing, red-haired, deep fried Mars-bar eating, irn bru-swilling drunken tosser of a Glaswegian toe-rag.:laugh::laugh:

Not for England, where the chances of us becoming part of an EU state are unlikely for a generation or two. It might be a problem for a newly independent Scotland though - control would probably soon flow from Edinburgh to Brussels.

That depends whos propaganda you believe. IIRC, the Scottish Independence Party would want "reparations" if they ever achieve independence - i.e. they'd want the English to cough up billions of pounds - an idea which I think is completely ludicrous and would never, ever come about. However, with the oil revenues, they might be OK for a while, but they would surely want to entice the thousands of Scots who left to work South if the border back again. I'm sure Colin Angus Mackay would have an opinion on this! He's a Scottish Nationalist.
