Stop talking out of your arse. My sister is in the Met and if you saw some of the shit she had to deal with on a daily basis, you'd eat your fucking words pal. Any faith you may have lost should be blamed on this slimy fucking government, not the coppers.

Well said. The nutter dressed up as a suicide bomber should have been shot where he stood as a threat to public safety. If the furore about the Brazilian now means that the police are afraid to shoot a man who appears to be wearing a load of explosives in a public place, then it's made us all far less safe.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4811122.stm[^] Three men have been charged over their alleged role in protests about cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad. What I want to know is how come it took about 6 weeks to arrest these nutters!?

Idd, talking about overreaction. :sigh: I heard (could be gossip though) that in Iran or Irak (or Afghanistan) they showed the people in the villages their own set of cartoons. (With Mohammed presented as a pig) But even then: overreaction. No hurries, no worries.

No need to be rude, wanker. As a paid-up member of the public all I get to see is what gets served up to me by our shitty gov and the awful media and my personal contact with the police. And I have seen a sea-change in the police over the last 40+ years no matter what you say or what your sister has to deal with (I do respect and admire individual coppers for whom the current policies are an anathema). When my daughter was mugged we could not get a policeman out to investigate or take a statement: they did not want to know. I spent a little time (a few years back) with the local police and even using my contacts proved futile. Most wanted/want to be like your sister but are constrained from doing so by pen-pushers and politically correct idiots. So, again, if you want the public to see your sister and her colleagues the way that I used to see them then there has to be a change. They are seen as I have described and have lost the trust of the public. You can't pin all of that on the gov (much as I'd like to help you do it). The upper echelons of the police must also bear the blame for inept policing strategy and a desire to raise revenue from soft targets. Where is the copper on the street? Where is my local copper that I knew by name and that would come into the office for a cuppa every now and again? Where is the copper on the beat that my son can admire and respect? www.merrens.com

Most cops are cowards that do nothing but write tickets and act "tough" only to normal citizens. There are some good ones, but they are few and far between. Jeremy Falcon

Yep. Many years ago the police used to be seen as a part of the community and respected. Most people knew the name of the local bobby and would feel comfortable to just stop and chat about life and mundane matters in general. My father-in-law (now sadly not with us) used to own a butchers shop in the town. Every morning at about 8.30 the local bobby would knock on the door and sit down with my father-in-law who would make him a mug of tea and a bacon buttie. Then they would chat as they shared breakfast. How long gone are those days now. The local bobby doesn't exist any more (in fact you are lucky to catch sight of a copper as he passes in his car) and even if one did pop in for a chat he wouldnt be allowed to accept a cup of tea or anything that could possibly be seen as a gift or bribe. What total Bullshit policing has become. Why should the public have any respect for people who they never see, dont know and only deal with in the unfortunate event of becoming a victim of crime (or commiting crime) and often that turns into an unpleasent dissapointment. Jon

I feel a disturbance in the force - it appears we are in agreement again (better not make this a habit... people will start to wonder) ColinMackay.net Scottish Developers are looking for speakers for user group sessions over the next few months. Do you want to know more?

Really? In the US, cops always get free food and coffee so that they'll hang around. That's where we get the cops and donuts jokes.

I think any apparent history of disagreement has been exaggerated. :)

I've seen police officers try to help someone and get attacked by them. Ever wonder why they get defensive? The tigress is here :-D

I'm sure that happens, but I'm talking about the majority of them that I've seen. I have no doubt there's a few good cops out there. Jeremy Falcon
