I guess one thing that surprised me most about the response to my post below was that I probably shouldn't have been at all surprised by it. And not just because this is the soapbox forum, where Christian's Rule* was born and breeds. I'm referring to the tongue in cheek remark I made about having a gun under my seat. Now even assuming for a moment that I was bloody stupid enough to carry a weapon in public, let alone conceal one, and ignoring that I have very strongly disagreed with the public owning firearms in this very forum for many years, why did so many people automaticaly assume I was being serious without question? If anyone came up to me round here and told me that carried a gun I would not believe them. I guess we must live in more than just different countries. I guess the difference is that when you can reasonably expect something like a gun to be there then you believe that there always can be one there. It's a shame because it is self-fulfilling. I made that comment at the blind absurdity I experienced tonight, and I'm sorry if I didn't disclaimer it enough. My fifth mistake, it seems. :rose: * Christian's rule: Whatever you write that can be misinterpretted will be misinterpreted.

Because if I had a gun under my seat, I would have been pulling it out about that time too. Other than that, it just flowed well with the context. It really didn't seem like you were transitioning from real adreniline pumping action to joking sawed off shotgun pumping action. So I guess the thought of the gun was your alter ego wishing one were there? ---sig---

I'm... ...sooo disappointed. :( I was all ready for "Training new drivers 3: Judgement Day", wherein David takes to the roads, shooting out tail lights on vehicles that offend him. Now i've got nothing left to look forward to for tomorrow. :sigh:

I tell you what, the next time I go to an airsoft event (one is coming up in May) I will shoot up some army 4x4s for you. I will try my best to get a '9' in the side of one - but no promises!

In the U.S., the driver of the other car would likely have had a gun and would have possibly used it against you for "getting in his way". It's good to know you're not going postal[^]. :)

I have to admit I did a double take at that sentence; and about 1 second later I had it in context. Don't worry about it David. People read things in their own cultural context. I've only seen three people carrying a gun here in Arizona in the 3 and a bit years I've lived here (and two of them were overseeing a chain gang by the roadside) but, given my own cultural baggage, I can't help wondering if that guy bearing down on me in his oversized pickup truck who wants me out of his way is armed. If I'd grown up here I imagine I wouldn't have that wonder or if I did it wouldn't be such a source of unease. *shrug* Rob Manderson I'm working on a version for Visual Lisp++ My blog http://blogs.wdevs.com/ultramaroon/[^]

Hi David, Guess I'm guilty of misinterpreting your offhand joke (which you and others had cleared up for me). To explain why, maybe this will help. In college (in the U.S.) one of the kindest and gentlest people I had ever met kept a realistic gun-like water pistol with him (illegal now to do that). Once when some unsavory characters were approaching us with not-so-good intent, my friend let his jacket open slightly, and the would-be-attackers left us alone. Of course, his bluff could have just as easily backfired- but you know the young..... So for me, it wasn't a huge leap to go from water pistol to perhaps a real gun, to be shown to the others who wish you harm, in order for them to leave you alone. I wasn't implying that I thought you had intended harm by asking what I did, but I was asking the legality of it in Great Britian (a question I know now is moot). I just wanted you to know my question wasn't a reflection of what I think of you, but of sheer curiosity. Sorry if it added stress to your already stressful situation. :rose: blueSprite -- modified at 10:33 Wednesday 5th April, 2006
