A question on a practice test for a math final read, "Condoleezza holds a watermelon just over the edge of the roof of the 300-foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second." The question went on to ask when the watermelon will hit the ground, based on a formula provided. Students, saying the question propagates a racial stereotype and denigrates US Secretary of State Rice, met with the chairman of the math department who agreed to remove the question from the department's files. But the women left feeling the school needed to take a deeper look at how a racist stereotype could be inserted into the curriculum.[^]

I don't get the connection. It was obviously racist and inappropriate. This isn't the first time the left has shown its true "colors" and racially attacked Condoleeza Rice.

Maybe I'm confused with all the PC mumbo-jumbo, ACLU, left-wing pinko, right-wing nut job, liberal panty-waste, conservative bible beaters, ad naseum. Who exactly is destroying freedoms here... in your opinion. "If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done." - Peter Ustinov

But we all know Rice would never waste a whole watermelon on such an experiment. Maybe they should have used "cracker" instead of "watermelon"... :) [EDIT] Oh c'mon! A 1 vote?! Obviously Condi is destroying the freedom of watermelons to reproduce anywhere but the parking lot of the Federal Building. I'm pretty sure I would not like to live in a world in which I would never be offended. I am absolutely certain I don't want to live in a world in which you would never be offended. Dave

The student overreacted in my opinion. They started a crusade even though the teacher apologized and the question was removed. Whatever happened to "sorry, I screwed up" as an acceptable response to a mistake?

Same here. Is there some connection between African Americans and watermelons that I don't know about? Or is it just that throwing watermelons off a building seems like a dumb thing to do? --- in which case I can see the question as anti-Rice but can't see how it is racist. Yes, a lot of the old racist caricatures of blacks in the US depicted them with watermelons. At any given instant there are considerably more assholes than mouths in the universe.

Interesting. I didn't know about that, but a little Googling provides ample corroboration. From the time of my birth until I was about 14, my family holidayed by the sea for 2 weeks each year. We always consumed watermelon on those holdidays and considered it a treat. Interesting. I didn't know about that, but a little Googling provides ample corroboration. From the time of my birth until I was about 14, my family holidayed by the sea for 2 weeks each year. We always consumed watermelon on those holdidays and considered it a treat. It has no racial or class associations in Australia. John Carson "To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason is like administering medicine to the dead." Thomas Paine

Watermelon is a common picknik item in the US also. I love them - and grew up eating them by the ton. But there is still an unfortunant racist connotation to them. "You get that which you tolerate"

In a beachside suburb of Gosford, not coincidentally about 10 minutes drive from where I holidayed as a child. John Carson "To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason is like administering medicine to the dead." Thomas Paine
