I think following code will solve ur problem if(pWnd->GetDlgCtrlID()==IDC_EDIT1) { CRect rect; pWnd->GetClientRect(&rect); pDC->FillSolidRect(&rect,RGB(255,0,0)); pWnd->ReleaseDC(pDC); } put this code in OnCtlColor ().
