BLACK FAMINE IN UKRAINE 1932-33[^] Man some events in history just fall through the cracks. I am not Ukrainian but this seems like a huge deal - Stalin starved to death 7 million people. It seems like something out of Orwell's books but I guess it happened.

I'll be honest - it's quite difficult for someone of my generation, born and raised after both the Communist sympathizers and "Red-scare" witch hunters had largely passed on, to comprehend the sort of public attitude it took to play down things like this. Kinda makes you wonder what our grandkids are gonna think about the events of today's world...

Two reasons: one, i didn't really learn of it for many years. I heard plenty of other things about the USSR, about the restrictions of ownership, commerce, religion, travel. I suppose i must've read about Stalin's five-year plans, and the resulting deaths in a textbook or encyclopedia... but it never seemed to get a whole lot of emphasis. #2: public attitude. Yelling "fascist!" is an insult; yelling "communist" is a joke. Heck, Godwin's Law refers to Hitler, not Stalin - because comparing someone to Stalin just isn't very effective.

Did they? I thought we called them "witch hunters" in reference to the famous Salem witch trials - that is, fanatical prosecutors of people who, for the most part at least, weren't witches.
