Just because Microsoft "own" the software doesn't mean they can't "hack" into it. If this was the case they could access anyone's intellectual and private "property" simply because it was stored on a Microsoft OS. Steve

Checking to see if an installation of their software is valid isn't hacking. The tigress is here :-D

Yepp, Microsoft is so dangerous this days! Keep away from them, especially if you have pirated software. Soon, they will release a satelit which will blow you directly if you will connect to internet with a pirated Windows. But going with Linux is safe. :->

Microsoft shipped a windows validation tool as part of the automatic updates. They have made no secret of the fact this tool was being pushed into the updates or of what this tool does. If you have a pirate copy of windows and set it to automatically download updates then you are effectively asking Microsoft to shut it down. The slightly intelligent would realize that i have probably given you the answer to your problem but i doubt you will get it. Install Linux and enjoy  Jon

you don't use pirated windows so maybe you don;t realize that using windows without updates is worse than using linux. i like linux very much but i couldn't find version of diablo that would run on it. anyway, now i think i have to search harder.

Good plan... come to a website dedicated mainly to windows and MS programming and advertise the fact that you have a pirate copy of windows. Kind of like advertising on iTunes that you just stole an iPod from the Apple Store! --- How to get answers to your questions[^]

Try using this Wine[^] Let's you run windows apps on Linux; but I'm not certain it supports any form of DirectX; I leave that up to you to find out ...

Yes, you are. You are complaining to us that your pirtated ILLEGAL copy of windows won't work. Boo-bloody-hoo!!! I work damned hard to write good quality software, imagine if I didn't get paid for it. How would I afford to live? How would I afford to eat? Let me put this as simply as I can: You are a thief!

Well, in my experience, irony is certainly much more subtle than those nicely stated license agreements from MS, or normal conventions on commercial software licenses; Given his apparent inability (or unwillingness) to understand those (what part of "theft" don't you understand...) then I guess he'll never 'get' irony. "Hey, I know. I'll go to a forum where lots of professional* developers hang out, and complain how my ability to commit theft as software piracy is being eroded" - Doh! Steve S Developer for hire *professional: someone who is paid money for the given activity. Does not imply any ability, just like 'We have a quality process' does not imply that the end product is any better, just that they know how to make another that stinks just as much.

So you're justifying piracy? The evolution of the human genome is too important to be left to chance.

From what I've heard, they weren't so up front. Apparently, Windows Genuine Advantage phones home to Redmond regularly with information that uniquely identifies your computer. This wasn't mentioned prominently when it wanted to install it as an "update". The evolution of the human genome is too important to be left to chance.
