            As a parent, I agree with himn. As a citizen, I understand that this is why we shouldn't let hot-headed victims be involved in setting policy.

              Exactly right. One of the fundamental markers of the progress of civilization is the removal of responsibility from victims for exacting punishment and the placing of that responsibility in the hands of the legal system, with the laws being determined by disinterested third parties. Unfortunately, recent fashions regarding victims' rights have encouraged a return to a more primitive view on these matters. Punishment is still exacted through the legal system, but with undue weight given to the policy positions of victims.

                          I'm not sure how many know that Australia had an official 'white Australia' policy in the 50s, but every time I see that, I'm reminded of the slogan 'two wongs don't make a white', and I get depressed...
