The most peculiar thing about American politics is that we are unwilling to discuss our blind and unrelenting support for Israel.. even when they practice their "city block for an eye" policy of revenge everytime they are attacked by some ragtag bunch of goatherds. The reasons for this are complex. Thinking people (those on the left) deplore the way Jews have been treated historically, and of course were appalled by what happened to them during WWI; so we tend to believe that Jews should have a place where they can live in peace and be left alone, if that's what they really want. Because of Jewish activism post-WWII, we have strong memes in place that prevent discussion of Israel's flaws. Such people are immediately labeled anti-Semites, which is a catch-all phrase describing everything from neo-Nazis to anyone who says that, maybe, Israel shouldn't kill 100 civilians for every kidnapped soldier (yes, I'm exaggerating). And then we have the wacky uberChristians, who number about 20% of the population, who see Israel as some sort of sacred theme park that must be preserved and even extended in order for the Rapture to occur, at which point they will all be lifted from their riding mowers up to Heaven, where they will eat fatty foods and watch TV all day. So politiicians are caught in this bind: if they criticize Israel, they are immeditaly labeled as anti-semites (= racist bigots). And yet the Anmiercan people are starting to realize that our unswerving devotion to the cause of this puny, theological democracy is really the cause of almost all of our foreign policy problems.. including the crazy decisions that have lead to the debacle in Iraq. I fear this won't change any time soon. But LaMont's possible (not inevitable) victory will be a step in the right direction.

Did they? I thought they just trampled rights, ignored the law, and ruined careers by getting people blacklisted, with basically nothing to show for it. I suppose it was worth it to be able to publically grill dangerous communist sympathizers like Charlie Chaplin, Paul Robeson, Arthur Miller, and Aaron Copeland.

You just choose some propaganda, write it here down and every fact doesn't interest you. You want to believe in your small politically strict orientated world you build around you, often without thinking about the facts. That doesn't mean you're always wrong, no. In fact you often tell the truth, but when you are wrong, nobody is able to show it you. I bet if you don't believe in something you still won't believe it, when you see it happen just next to you again and again. Regards, Ingo

okay - I guess I'm be obscure. Before I net it out, I need to give some back ground. I grew up a Democrat. My father was a blue collar union steelworker, a committed Democrat. In those days both parties cared deeply about the defense of the country. The differences were marginal, especially in my youth which was immediately post-WWII. In the Veitnam era the Demoract part became nearly violently anti-war and stayed that way for a long time. Carter was the epitome, anti-war and a cowardly leader combined. Clinton for all his moral mishaps brought the Democrat party to the middle where the majority of Americans live - that is why, even with his moral turpitude the majority of the country stood behind him. The Iraq war is bringing the nut job Democrats out of the wood work pushing good men like Leiberman aside. Instead of working with the current administration to bring about a decent out come they're pushing solely for political gain, much like the bemoaned McCathyites (Republicans) did on the push against communism. Lanny Davis is decrying that extremism. Remember, he's a loyal Democrat but a Democrat who lives in the middle and not the extreme left (Dean, Soros, Lamont). Lanny is one of the first to speak up, and that is good. But watch the primaries. If the Democrats continue running to the left, dropping Leiberman in favor of Lamont then you'll see bigger Republican majorities because of the two choices that is the logical place for the middle to go.

Care to give some examples? McCarthy was on a fact-finding mission to root out Communists hidden in American society (mostly government). McCarthyism is simply accusing somebody of being a Communist and later finding out that they really are. Are you saying that if there were Shiite terrorists in key government positions that you wouldn't want to know?

I didn't say they were overthrown. I said they overthrew the government before them. Once again you're taking the anti-Democratic, pro-liberal side. (P.S., as we see in the US, a liberal "election" isn't actually "democratic").
