Why? You claim that your church's morality is superior to mine. Only I have to conform to your church whereas you do not have to conform to mine. Anyway, not everything is reduced to morality, but that (crime) is the topic of discussion. Immoral people do commit crime. Immoral people do not. Educated people do commit crime, however.

 So basically you couldn't find anything to back up your made up claim on Google so now you saying I need to visit a bookstore. Riiiiight. And I didn't say that a police presence reforms criminals. In fact I said the opposite. I said that it takes an overwhelming presence of police to prevent crime because criminals have to feel as though someone is watching them.

I'm not attempting to define a "moral person" here as that's a large topic and separate topic. I'm just addressing your error of the day. However, suffice it to say that immorality is the cause of crime.

I think Libertarians have somewhat diversified their stance to something that resembles compulsory anarchy. However, if you go back to the earlier days of the Libertarian Party, legalizing pot was their primary platform. I saw a live political debate for a local office when I was 18 or so and the Libertarian candidate literally reframed every issue into pot. It was pretty funny.

I originally said that police presence reduces crime partly by displacing it, which is why it is not a viable long-term solution. You disputed that fact.

Of course you're not going to define it. Making arguments based on terms with ill-defined or arbitrary definitions is the foundation of most of your arguments. Also, it would expose your assertion as the same tired, arbitrary, irrational and therefore logically indefensible crap that has been trotted out by the Inquisition, the Moral Majority, and every group in between with a burning (no pun intended) desire to impose their religion on an unwilling populous.

link[^] As is always the case, the mainstream media has adopted the Democratic pre-election platform:
The slaying of the 20-year-old mother -- on a narrow street behind a police
station in Boston's poor Roxbury district last month -- is one of the shocking
examples of a rise in the murder rate across the United States that is raising
questions about whether police are fighting terrorism at the expense of
crime. It goes on to further blame Bush for fewer cops on the street...as if that's the federal government's role. But beyond the obvious political slant of this article, when did the presence of police become the deterrent for crime? Why would police be a deterrent, but the possession of firearms by law-abiding citizens cause crime (as also suggested)? If you ask me, crime is simply the result of bad people. Poverty does not necessarily breed crime, as there are numerous honest poor people. Guns don't breed crime as there are numerous guns held by law abiding people. The presence of police only deters crime when the criminal-to-be fears their immediate presence (and will commit a crime when the opportunity arises). Interestingly enough, if you look at American murder statistics, there's a pivot points in the late 1960's. Before then murder rates were consistently very low and afterwards they were high. I'm sure it's more than coincidence that this point in US history marked the rapid increase in divorce, abortion and moral permisiveness.

While it is correct that poverty does not necessarily cause crime most people would agree that as poverty increases in a population of people so does the crime rate in that same population.
espeir wrote:

Again, perfectly true. But it's not the "law abiding people" with guns that are the problem. Obviously guns are not the cause of crime but they can make a bad situation worse. They can also act as a catalyst by emboldening the potential criminal; some may think twice about robbing a 7-11 if they have to wrestle the money from the cashier but a gun makes it all too easy and also makes the potential consequences when something goes wrong much, much worse.
