Which are you running? I am a bit hesitant to install the 64bit version of Vista beacuse all of the sillyness that I expreianced with the 64bit versions of XP and 2K3. That said, I am really hoping that vista will be a useable 64bit windows OS. For those of you that did install the 64bit version would you do it again and would you recommend it? TIA Chris

I installed the 32-bit because I assumed the 64-bit version would be twice as buggy (twice as many bits means twice as buggy). :)

Seems to me like two reasons for it to fail. Having done the 64 bit XP thing, I went straight to 32 bit.

I installed the 64 bit version, and except for the installation problem I experienced which was highly likely down to graphics drivers I have not noticed any other problems that come down to the edition I chose. (Vista 64 bit is much more restrictive on drivers - it won't allow unsigned drivers to install unlike Vista 32 bit.) Prior to that, I have been using Windows XP x64 for around 12-18 months or so with zero related problems. I think so long as your base hardware has good support then you won't have too many problems. The only thing to do would be to try it and see. Your experience will either be close to perfect, or very, very bad.

Hi, Thanks for the info. I've just brought a new computer with XP 64 bit. I'm just wondering what your experience of XP 64bit is like. How well, do 32 bit applications run on Win XP 64bit? I was a bit worried about the bug issue. But you've cleared that for me :) Thanks Tom

Yeah, it is unlikely you find any problem at all with most software. Of course there is bound to be something that won't work now that I've said that, but I haven't found it yet! ;)

I'll second your comments. I've been running XP 64-bit for a long time also and experienced no problems except drivers, mainly for my HP printer. I've jumped three systems to Vista x64 and have no problems at all, again except for HP printer drivers. The install and setup was so smooth, I didn't even load any drivers for the hardware, it was all taken care of. Sweet!

Hi, I'm currently using WINXP 32bit... I love the interface of Vista, and also want to have a look on the new features of Vista. I'm curious to try out 64bit since my pc is support for 64bit. Anyway, here are some questions: 1. 64bit OS support 32bit software? What I means is, all the software I installed should be stated support 64bit or any older version (32bit) also will be supported? (I'm a serious gamer, so i'll really disappointed if can't play a lot of games just because of cannot support 64bit...) 2. Is there any incompatible with Visual Studio? (I still remember last time when I upgrade from WINME to WINXP, visual studio 6 have a lot extra errors and my lecturer told me WINXP have extra about 50-60 bugs on visual studio which cannot be solved yet... that time i think haven't release XP SP2...) 3. You mention about HP printer driver is the only hardware driver cannot settle, the rest of the hardware can easily auto detected and installed by using VISTA pre-included driver is it? Sorry for the long question... and hope I can get the answer. I'm not hoping to buy the Vista 64bit, try it out and then throw it a side, go install back WINXP 32bit...

Running 32bit apps depends on what chip you have. I have AMD x64 processors which are designed to run 32bit and 64bit simultaneously. Out of three systems I've migrated I haven't found any incompatibilites with apps, I did one machine as an upgrade from WinXP and the other two as fresh installs. All drivers loaded flawlessly. The HP printer issue is with networked printers.

:laugh::laugh: Show me a list! I can't recall any bugs in VS related to WinXP.
