I just tried K-Lite codec pack under Vista because I need to play mpeg-2 files, and I got a BSOD. Any recommendations? I also need other codecs to work, such as xvid, divx, mpeg-4, etc. Before installing the codec, all Vista did was play the audio. After installing, *boom*. And it also has problems with vmr9 overlays in DirectX. Marc

Never mind! I found Advanced Vista Codecs[^]. Works great (except the vmr9 overlay code is still BSOD'ing). Marc

VLC[^] gets my highest recommendation. No installs needed, just unzip it and run it.

That looks really slick. Are you using it as just a media player, or in a client/server streaming configuration? Marc

I've only ever used it as a media player, never tried watching a stream.
