An interesting quote from this BBC article[^] in reference to the whole BB Is it Racism or not nonsense; "there is no level of toleration in this country for anything which, rightly or wrongly, is perceived to be racist" [rant] What a load of crap, and no wonder this country has gone to the dogs under Blair et al. Basically, even if an act is perceived wrongly as discriminatory, (in that it is not discriminatory but some idiot has chosen to call it so), the act shouldn't be tolerated, suggesting that the perpertrator should be villified. Well I say BOLLOCKS! And this isn't in defence of the morons on that show being abusive probably because of jealousy, its the fact that that statement implies anyone should be villified for anything they say if any one other person doesn't like it. Well, there was me thinking this was a democracy and free country - I just fecking hate politicians trying to score cheap political points without using at least some of the intelligence they must surely have to proof read what they're saying. What a load of shite! [/rant]

Rhys Thought for the day: Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that, according to the texts, a lone amateur built the Ark and a large group of professionals built the Titanic.

Welcome to the politically correct world where you can't judge ANYONE. I agree, it's insane.

I see the problem as political correctness overwhelming common sense to the point where democracy is giving way to tyranny. This is no longer a free country by any stretch of the imagination: it is run by left-wing human rights junkies who are right even when they are wrong and ordinary citizens are here to provide the taxes which allow them to strengthen their base of power whilst having lost the ability to express their own views. I don't condone racism or bullying in any form but I should be allowed to express an articulate view even if it is at odds with yours. 2007 == 1984 And if you think Blair is bad for us wait till Brown gets his hands on the reins of power. Oh big brother...

Here, in the U.S., you have the freedom of speech........unless someone may possibly interpret the statement as derogatory to a type of people (even though the intent was never there).

I don't watch BB. But what got me was the fuss that one of the morons could not pronounce her name correctly, this was a GROSS insult and RACIST allegedly. Well most English people can't pronounce my Christian name, lets face it the English are not the best nation at speaking languages other that English! So I don't consider that a racist slur, it is just that most people can't pronounce it, after all why why should I expect anyone to be able to, unless they are Polish? Recently my mother was in hospital, she was asked which nurse administered her drugs, she said 'it was the fat black nurse'. The nurses was horrified by this ratial slur, but as my mother said to her how do you describe me? Don't you call me the elderly Polish lady? I think PC is getting stupid, I am sure the black nurse would not object to be called black, she might object to being called fat though! It is just the white liberals that complain IMHO

Actually, one of my favorites is the use of "African American" in the news. Who said the person was American? Where is the proof? There are so many people in this country from other countries and don't consider themselves Americans, there is no way to prove they are an American citizen. If you're trying to be PC to the point you may be prejudicing public opinion, that is racism. Why not use "of African decent" or something like that?

A wonderfully enlightened response. I also haven't seen it (I wouldn't take time out of shitting to watch Big Brother) but it is almost 100% guaranteed not to be anything close to how the newspapers are reporting. Especially not the newspapers in India whom I am to understand are reporting this as some sort of remotely significant story? Having heard about the other people involved (I don't know who the Indian woman is) I would bet my life savings they are just common ignorant tarts. Most of the people in that TV programme couldn't even spell 'race', let alone 'racism'. This Indian woman was deliberately put into the programme because she is better than them in almost every way, and the producers knew that would give them a stir. Don't give Channel 4 the satisfaction of making this into a controversy that will earn them millions of dollars. If you do, the next series will put black, gay Jews and Nazis together just to get a stir. IIRC they have already carefully selected mentally ill/retarded people with conflicting problems in previous series, so it will happen if you let it continue.

I don't understand what the hell you are complaining about. The attitude of 'racism as anything I say it is as long as it helps me politically' has become so pervasive in our society that it has, in fact, become a new kind of scarlet letter. Two thirds of the more left leaning posters on this very forum use it virtually every day as a counter to any thing they disagree with politically. As far as they are concerned, it seems, the only possible reason for anyone disagreeing with a lefty is racism. The left has turned what was once an important cultural issue to resolve (and did resolve) into an unending moral crusade to reshape human civilization. It cripples our ability to contend with any threat if that threat is promulgated by non-European races and cultures. It is a much bigger problem than some silly television show, it is a knife aimed at the very heart of western civilization (the best civilization, BTW)

Modern liberalism has never achieved anything other than giving Secularists something to feel morally superior about

Yep. I'm called a racist here almost on a daily basis. :) What's really funny is when I'm called a racist when I make fun of certain fanatical religious groups whose origins are in the middle east and whose members wear bed sheets on their heads. I guess the bed sheet thing makes a certain amount of sense because it serves to keep the sand out of their hair, and can double as an impromptu tent. I wonder if the bed sheet manufacturers there run commercials on TV that resemble the light beer commercials here in the U.S.... Off-screen announcer: "Abdul's Head Sheets, for just 24 camel teeth and a shiney rock!" First on-screen camel jockie: "It's a head sheet!" Second on-screen camel jockie: "It's a handy tent!" First on-screen camel jockie: "It's a head sheet!" Second on-screen camel jockie: "It's a handy tent!" First on-screen camel jockie: "It's a head sheet!" Second on-screen camel jockie: "It's a handy tent!" Woman approaches men: "No, you silly men! It's both!" First and second on-screen camel jockies: "You are just a woman and your opinion is NOT VALUED!!!" Fade to black as first and second on-screen camel jockies beat woman relentlessly...

Let me start by saying that I do not know who Shilpa is, or who Jack Tweed is. I only know of Jade Goody because she was on the news the last time she was on this 'fine' TV programme. The first quote is not racist at all. It is somewhat stupid to make it on public television, yes, but they are stupid people and it is a perfectly harmless comment to make. I have Indian friends who joke about how white I am, and how I should go to India to 'brown up a little bit'. Is that racist? Of course it isn't. It is poking fun at cultural differences and not intended to be malicious. Jade Goody is far too thick to be deliberately racist. The second quote is not racist either, it is plain old bullying. If Shilpa wasn't Indian, but still managed to cook a Chicken meal that is not tuned for western palates, I bet Mr. Tweed would have made exactly the same comment. The rush to label any little upset or injustice as an 'ism' (sexism, racism, etc) is completely out of hand. Take some responsibility for yourself goddamnit and stop trying to pile blame for everything onto someone else. Racism is all in the intent. You can be racist without saying anything obviously offensive. Your ending comment, trying to suggest that the west is teeming with racism is absurd -- your own country is one of the worse in the way its treats its own groups of people, and you are all the same race. P.S.: Please capitalise letters after a full stop, it is very hard to follow what you are saying. It looks like one big sentence.

I view it more broadly...The assertion that an individual or a segment of society (whether it be differentiated by race, economic situation or now even behavior) warrants them to be considered better or worse than average, simply by virtue of belonging to that group, violates the primary liberal principle -- equality. By making such an assertion, you are dispensing with liberalism and you must be chastised for it. After all, independence of thought of clearly a liberal myth. Conservatism asserts that we are created equal and are responsible for shaping our lives from birth. The quality of our lives results from the quality of our character and the decisions we make as a result. Contrast this with liberalism which incorrectly asserts that we should remain equal throughout our lives (which, of course, is contrary to human nature and therefore requires an overbearing and despotic government to enforce). There are far too many angles that liberals use tp chastise those who part with their concept of equality to limit their engagement to "racism" alone.

I knew it wouldn't be long before you got one of those comments. That is a perfect example of the problem. "Racism" has come to be viewed as the greatest single evil that humanity can engage in. And anything that in any way denegrates anyone other than white people or their culture is inherently racist. You cannot be critical of any other people or culture regardless of how perfectly loathsome they might be because that would be racist, and racism is worse than any other possible consideration. So, for exmaples, Muslims mudering thousands might be bad, but to in any way imply that such behavior might some how be assciated with endemic flaws in the culture of the middle east is a racist reaction to the violence, and is therfore worse and must be reacted to with more force and concern than the violence itself. It represents a thoroughly intellectually bankrupt strangle hold on western culture, and we have no hope of survival until we break out of the embrace by whatever means necessary.

Modern liberalism has never achieved anything other than giving Secularists something to feel morally superior about

How are "camel jockie" and "wearing bed sheets on their heads" valid criticism? It's no different that using the "N" word. Get a grip, stan.

My grip isn't the problem, your inability to see through your own leftist dogma is. The point isn't whether or not it is racist, the point is the relative significance of racism in our society to murderous violence in that of someone else. To be so concerned about solving the issue of racism in your own society, to make it the single most significant issue you are concerned with, at a time when another culture is producing mass murder on a grand scale, is irrational. To be more intolerant of racism than the other culture is of murder is irrational. To continuously make excuses for that other culture because to be critical of them would make you a 'racist' also is irrational. To wait until your own culture is so thoroughly sterilized of any tendency to make the occassional racially profane comment befure you are willing to do anything at all about the utter lack of civil conduct of the other culture is irrational.

Not only do you need to get a grip, but you also need to see through your own leftist dogma. The point is that calling an arab a camel jockie is racist. Plain and simple. And describing it as such is in no way being tolerant of murder(what a bizarre idea!). Nor is it "making excuses for that other culture". Nor is it disallowing criticism of the other culture. "Camel jockie" adds nothing to the discussion. Get a grip stan.

Why are you pushing the idea that pointing out the fact that a society rides camels or wears towel-like headgear is racist? Why do you think that such things are inferior? Are you a racist? Are you 12?

Ummmmmm....Huh? I don't advocate equality because people aren't equal. Our character (achieved during life) sets us apart from one another. Liberalism asserts that people (who aren't equal) should be forced into equality and that pointing out the glaring inferiorities of certain groups of people (which is contary to that liberal principle of equality) constitutes bigotry*. Sorry, but if you choose to join a group of people which advocates the destruction of western civilization, then you are worthy of any and all ridicule. *Unless a leftist is criticizing conservatives. That fits the definition of bigotry, but sense liberalism was developed in Bizarro world, that kind of bigotry is acceptable.
