Yep, we're seeing how an incompetent Republican presidency has fostered the revival of socialist wackos in Latin America. Alvaro

So, people voting for populist socialist asshats can be blamed on Bush? There's me thinking it was the result of the economic mismanagement of some of neo liberal regimes of the 1990 and living in societies far less sheltered from the cyclical nature of capitalism than the Gringos do.

So, in other words, the only thing wrong with Marxism is that it hasn't been tried yet by the right people. If only 'normal' people were in charge giving government all sociatal power would be just fine.
Modern liberalism has never achieved anything other than giving Secularists something to feel morally superior about

Liberals just don't seem to understand that Marxism is completely contrary to human nature and actually requires a megalomaniac (or, at a minimum, some other flavor of totalitarianism) to "succeed".

It's remarkable how quickly socialists decide that democracy and free markets are an impediment , while autocracy and and rule by decree are valuable tools for the advancement of socialism. And it's always cast as being "for the good of the people". And I don't think Chavez would have been any less inclined to do what he is doing if Jimmy Carter (or similar) were the president of the US. Bush just makes for a more conveniently demonizable excuse...

To a certain extent, yes. Bush has become a "devil" in many parts of the world and populist asshats have used him as a bullying, imperialist enemy to rally up against. In the mean time, Bush himself has been busy with his mess in the Middle East and has forgotten to take the necessary steps to ensure that bastards like Chavez don't go/get too far. Remember Panama? Bush Sr. quickly took care of that. Remember Granada? Reagan quickly took care of that. Venezuela, an oil-exporting democracy, should have been taken care of too, IMO. Alvaro

my God man, you're becoming a neo-con. All kidding aside, I happen to agree but I could probably predict the words out of: NYT, Teddy Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, 98% of the newspapers across the country, and on and on.

No. I'm a centrist and I believe in taking the best of all sides to arrive at a happy medium that benefits those at the bottom (so they can get on their feet) and everyone else (so they can continue rising). One reason this country is so great is because it applies some socialist concepts, such as government regulation, progressive taxation, and welfare programs to its capitalist economy. The result is a happy medium that makes it possible for anyone to prosper. That's what Venezuela needed, IMO. Alvaro

If the choice is: we interfere and they call us "Imperialist" or we don't interfere and Chavez, Castro, Hussein, or Jong-Il happens, I'd rather we interfere. But it has to be swift. As long as we take care of the problem swiftly, the bitching doesn't hold much water nor does it last too long. Alvaro

You're absolutely correct. But it can't be swift as long as you have so large a percentage of the nation, politicians and media working to undermine any such effort. Mistakes will always occur in any such activity, they always have and they always will regardless of who is in charge. If a commaner in chief is required to tolerate the level of abuse Bush has, success would be impossible. The model for how to successully complete such operations are WWII and the American Civil War, when both FDR and Lincoln vigorously pursued their political opponents at home with every tool at their disposal - constitutional or not. Once war is engaged, that effort must always come before regard for the civil rights of those who wish to undermine it for their own political gain.

I fundamentally disagree with that. This nation has its own poltical model, based upon the Jeffersonian principles established at its founding. Those basic principles of small central government, respect for private ownership of property before any other consideration, and local poltical control of social concerns, should remain what we fiercely cling to as a nation and as a people. That model is precisely the opposite of the Marxist model. You cannot mix the two without eventually becomeing all Marxist. The more you give people, the more you have to give them. The more you care for them, the more you have to care for them. It becomes impossible to control over time. We are at the tipping point now politically and badly need to go back in the other direction.

If I read you correctly, you believe that most people are looking to do as little as possible while taking as much advantage of others (government in this case) as possible. I don't see it that way. I believe most people (in this country, at least) like standing on their own two feet and finding prosperity on their own, based on their own abilities. You give them the opportunity to make a living doing something they're good at, and they'll take advantage of it. They prefer the house in the suburbs, the nice car, and the big screen TV, to food stamps, the bus, and living in crime-infested projects. That's how I see it, and it's evident in our strong middle class. I'm sure there are those who don't give a crap and prefer poverty to lifting a finger, but that's such an insignificant minority that we shouldn't worry about them. The ones we should worry about are the ones who genuinely want to get on their feet (after they fall or get tired of being down), and simply can't because everyone has turned their back on them. Those are the ones we should never abandon if we are to continue having a strong middle class and low crime rates. Alvaro

If I remember correctly, the "ez" ending in spanish names means "Son of" (like the "Mac" in mine). Hugo, Son of Chav.
