Throwaway society

In a society where money is something you pay back tomorrow and reality TV is considered 'social commentary', I suppose it is no shock to find people throwing out their live, unwanted pets in the trash. I do find it shocking though. Very. X| Hamsters thrown out with rubbish[^]

I'm so gangsta I eat cereal without the milkMy wife has bought my daughter dogs, rabbits, you name it. I've put a stop to it, but I've always been the one who looked after them. I gave the dogs away to good homes, and I bought the rabbit a huge hutch, so it has some level of comfort, despite not being played with. I can see less responsible parents just throwing away unwanted pets. It's still disgusting, but I am not surprised at all. :(

I'm so gangsta I eat cereal without the milkThat is a shame. Sometimes I think people should not be allowed to own animals but that wouldn't be a very good idea because pets are so common and needed by a lot of people. I have a one year old German Shepard that was rescude by my dad. It was tied to a telephone pole with no water or food or anything. Its collar was so tight that it actually grown into its neck and was choking it. His ears were covered with flies that were eating away the tips. He was really skinny. Now he is happy, healthy, well fed and watered. He is even trained well. He is sleeping in a pile of dirty laundry in my room now with a bone next to him. I don't see how the fuckers who owned him could have let that happen, he is such a nice dog. They paid over 500 bucks for a dog they don't want, and they even had the balls to get pissed off because we stole it.

What I don't understand is why they don't just kill them? I would rather they had a large brick dropped on them, than being left to die of starvation or suffocation six feet under in a landfill site. But I guess if their owners don't even have the guts to admit what utter failures they are and dump their pets at a rescue centre then what chance is there that they care at all. :sigh: I really shouldn't be shocked, after all many people do the same with their children, but still... throwing a living dependant animal out with last night's dinner and the TV Times is just sick.

I'm so gangsta I eat cereal without the milkThat's no surprise. One of the veterinarians in the town I live in is known for doing a substantial number of euthenasias prior to Christmas every year. The reason? "The kids are bored with our <insert-current-pet> so we're going to buy them a <insert-new-pet>." :wtf:

Eh, you're too harsh. At least they had a last meal and some reading material...

I'm so gangsta I eat cereal without the milkHow uncivilized. Back when I was a kid, we just took unwanted pets out back and shot them. Although, I suppose hamsters could have just been fed to the cat.

Good idea, its needs a lot of room when you fatten it up for cooking.

We have sheep for meat, I have no problem with that. Don't like rabbit, tho.

Always the popular post Stan, you must have a record unequalled even by Kyle.

Damn! I can't believe no one found any humor in that. I laughed my ass off when I wrote it.

I'm so gangsta I eat cereal without the milkMy wife and I do a lot of volunteering with Sheltie Rescue in the Dallas-Ft Worth area. It is appalling at what some owners do to their pets. They will take them to a new vicinity and dump them oout of their cars. Most of the time it's because the pets are either unwanted or have a medical problem (which in many cases is very minor). We have dogs that come in all the time that are heartworm positive. People won't even do the basics to keep their dogs healthy. I've seen dogs in such bad shape that they are not able to be saved. And this goes for just about all breeds. Almost every breed of dog has a Rescue group that does their best to save as many dogs as possible and then place them with responsible new owners. The questionnaires adopters have to fill out is worse than filling out applications for credit! And there are inspections done of the prospective new home for the animals. Plus the new owners must agree that the dogs will be inside dogs and not kept outside. There are a lot of ex-dog owners who deserve to be whipped for the way they have treated their animals. The most amazing thing of all is how rapidly most of these dogs adapt to their new surroundings. And that they are still capable of returning love after the way they've been mistreated.
