Totally agree. Windows is instable because applications not doing what they are supposed to do, usually corrupting memory that not belong to the process, also is Windows fault for not been protected as it should be, although from Windows 2000 everything changed a lot. So far what I know in Windows XP 64 all drivers run on user mode, if that is true I'm wondering if on Windows Vista all drivers will be running at user mode or some of them will keep running at kernel mode as for example the video drivers.

If Mac OS X was as popular as Windows, they would still not have a hardware problem because Apple *controls* the hardware. Microsoft does not have that option. It is not an "apples to apples" comparison. The only thing one needs to do on a PC is to stay with reputed manufacturers. Thomas

Lets not even mention the DOS based windows, just the NT based ones, NT4, 2K, XP, 2003, Vista. XP 64 (version 5.2, same as Sserver 2003) doesn not have user mode drivers, it is the same as all NT systems after NT 3.5, all drivers run in the kernel. Vista has user mode drivers though, which will be slower, but wont kill the system when they break.

Apple does not license Mac OS X to be run on any other hardware. Windows never did that. They made it clear when asked about running Intel processor OS X on PCs.

I am not sure what you are saying. Are all the people complaining about BSODs running illegal versions of software? Apple makes hardware, and sells an operating system for it. Microsoft makes an Operating system that can run on computers made to a certain open standard. They have to deal with all the hardware -- including chipsets, disk controllers and the like, which OS X does not have to deal with. The closed hardware is one of the reasons why OS X does not have mass appeal. It is not easy to pirate it. I mean, if you are pirating it, you already have an Apple computer. Thomas

No one else was offered the chance to buy in. IBM took the proprietary position and it died: they would not licence it out nor allow any others to produce hardware for it. Dumb as a dumb person in a dumb finder competition being judged by dumb people. And it was bloody good: unlimited address space so no 64k page limits: cried out for CP/M for Windows :-)

I can't understand why people voted you down; it is a very coherent argument and since this is a programmer's site people should have known that. Geez, I had Oracle 9.0 client command line crashing under Linux! Bugs happen! That's why lots of software is now release in an eternal "Beta" stage.:)

I would like to see a better model from microsoft though. If they had a better system for drivers then the drivers written for 98 could still be used and the teams could focus on improving them.

Of course, what you really meant to say was... "If the Mac had twenty billion fucking combinations of hardware like the PC does, it would have the same problem." The Mac isn't near as big of a moving target as the PC is.
