:) I dont think there have been any attacks on tourists there but our government is discouraging travel on the grounds that the political and military situation is fragile at the moment. Their government was overthrown by the leader of their military a few months ago

There used to be a TV show here in Oz called Jeffery Robinsons Hypothetical that I really enjoyed. He would get a bunch of people from different walks of life and pose a hypothetical question for discussion. Along the lines of this I have a hypothetical question for you. If an increase in temp (I dont care how its caused, we'll say Stan lit a fart) was to cause Fiji to become submerged how should the international community deal with it? What would happen to the 1000's of homeless and stateless people? What would be the economic impact? How could we prevent this from causing a general destabalisation of the Pacific region? What would happen the companies who depend on trade in this area and the people who rely on these companies for their income?

They should immediately stop scheduling commercial flights to Fiji. 'Cause, it's gone. I suspect the former citizens of Fiji who managed to escape should be divided up among various countries such that there wouldn't be too many of 'em in any one place. Gotta keep 'em feeling glad to be alive, ya know? Don't want pissed-off Fijians running amok. But the thing with airplanes should come first.

Okay where were the bombs that detonated in a hot Aussie spot? This would have been a couple years ago.

Well, i suppose we could cry about it too, do some good ol'-fashioned wailing and lamenting at the regrettable short-sightedness of under-fishing the Great Burrowing Island-Eater Shark. Then we could test some nukes, just to get it all out of our system. But i still think the airplane thing is key. If there's one thing i've learned in my short life, it's that when airplanes crash, people freak out.

Mate, are you taking the piss? If your not interested in the topic I'd like to discuss then please just move on to the next thread or start one of your own thats more to your liking.

You asked a hypothetical question; i'm giving hypothetical answers... ;) (not out to sabotage really, just took this thread as a thinly-veiled run at the GW issue that's been cropping up rather a lot lately...)

Well thats not the case, if I wanted to discuss that I would be a lot more direct. As I said, if you dont like it move along, there's nothing to see here :)

Whoops. Got them backwards. Anyhow, I expect organizations such as the Red Cross to come to the rescue such as they did after the After Christmas Tsunami and hurricaine Katrina. There are always people who are willing to help even if that means bringing someone into their own home. I wish I could say everyone is like that.

That show was awesome, I wonder if it's on DVD. Have you read his book ? Equally fascinating. Very smart guy.

Well, the core questions would be: Humantiarian aid to those affected Serious consideration of this event as a trend, and what can be done to deal with it
Josh Gray wrote:

We'd probably put them in the desert and vilify them.
Josh Gray wrote:
What would be the economic impact?
Almost zero
Josh Gray wrote:

Well, how would Fiji submerge and the other islands, not ? What about our coastline ?

I guess their stock would plummet.

I guess my version was not so well thought out as his used to be. Thanks for taking the time to make a thoughtful reply though.

It's called The Justice Game, and it's about some of his most significant cases over the years. It comes highly recommended.

Hypothetically,

They're fishbait - who cares?

None. What do you buy from Fiji? Fish?
Josh Gray wrote:

Since when does Fiji have any impact?

There are other markets and other jobs. Travel a bit...

Never heard of that show, but it sounds interesting. Your question you suggest is hypothetical but in reality, it is happening now insofar that there are islands in the Indian ocean (The Maldives for example) that are used to being flooding from the sea and that the height and severity of these floods are getting worse (rising sea levels due to melting polar icesheets etc). Generally, these islands will not in themselves be missed. Tourists will find some place else to visit. These islands are not big enough to support any kind of industrial process to effect their economy, as such that won't be missed. The peoples living there will need to be evacuated to a place or places of safety but their immediate destination might also be troublesome as there could be some resentment if these evacuees receive some kind of preferential treatment. So there will be political problems, economic problems, and further environmental problems at wherever their destination becomes even if that is temporary.
