I'm dual booting between Win2K and Vista (or at least I'm trying to). When I boot into Vista, it always tell me my recycle bin is corrupted. Does anyone know why, and even better, does anyone know how to fix it?

A program we've got at home, convenitently labelled "WipeDisk" (BTW, you better be sure when you hit enter for the final time because it is the final time , not even the Flying Squad could retrieve data after it'd been run :-D) Sorry I'm just in a sarcastic mood

This is just a guess, but I'd say that some part of the on-disk structure making up the Recycle Bin has changed between Windows 2000 and Windows Vista. Windows 2000 does not understand this change and overwrites some part of the structure incorrectly. When you then boot Vista, it sees the structure as corrupted. No fix possible until Microsoft either patch Windows 2000 to not corrupt the structure, or patch Windows Vista to detect the corruption. As always if it's causing a problem, make a support call; if you don't, Microsoft will never know and won't do anything about it.

Well, they don't support Win2k any longer, and they haven't started supporting Vista yet. Even if they did and knew about the problem, they'd probably just respond with "working as designed". Frankly, I'm tired of getting those kinds of responses from MS.

I just reformatted the drive and took up the whole partition with Win2k. My Vista problems are all solved. :)

I knew about the light, but I ignored it so I could base my Vista rantings on facts. :)

I believe this can happen if the file permissions aren't what the OS expects them to be. Maybe the Recycle Bin permissions are different between the two operating systems and each one keeps changing what the other creates. You can trigger the error message by messing with the permissions and then opening or emptying the recycle bin (or rebooting). Windows then corrects the problem and erases anything that was in the bin in the process. I don't think it's anything to worry about, except for the annoying message when you boot into a different OS. Maybe there's a workaround, though. (Can you rename the recycle bin folder in one OS? I can't remember if it's hardcoded or not.)

Sorry man. I was trying to go to the next page and accidentally gave you a 2 rating (not really sure how I managed to do that). Didn't mean for that to happen, though. My bad.
