Just a little sensation to spark things up... What is your take on jobs in the Games/Graphics programming side? Why are the wages so low? Is it because programming games is something that's enjoyable (laugh)? With the appearance of Video Games as mainstream entertainment, you would think that wages would be more comparable to that of other similar Software Engineering positions.. but what do I know? ;P

Simple economics. Too many people want to do it. The supply of programmers interested in gamedev is much larger than the demand, which suppresses the price. If I could make about the same amount of money for about the same amount of work, I'd jump on a gamedev job. Since I can't, and I can't; I'll keep doing more boring work that pays the bills.

-- Rules of thumb should not be taken for the whole hand.

Kinda seems crooked to me, but I guess that's the way the world works. I guess what we really need is something to make everyone else want to do the boring work so I can make games. ;P

          - Kill 90% of all current game developers. - Kill 90% of all current competitors for game developing. - Put résumé in decent format on job boards etc. to get an interview. - Tell guy at interview you want a high salary, 'cause there aren't any candidates left and he needs someone desperately. That should work ;P

IMO, there are many novice developers wanting desparately to get into game development*) and willing to work like slaves for "their" game. So their is a huge supply of cheap, "unskilled" labor, and this makes salaries earthrocket through the floor. *)Game programming has some sex appeal. A girl once asked me why Iprogram at all. "everything exists already!". I guess here reaction would have been different if I said "I wrote The Sims".

Why do people spend millions inventing new computing technology? If you can go to the moon on 32k of RAM, then it should be good enough for everything, right?
