They are trying to protect the child from having a miserable life because their idiot parents weren't able to choose a decent name.

A miserable life? How do you know that? It's a guess that maybe some kids will pick on her (assuming kids even know who Metallica is 10 years from now). Oh no, kids poking fun at each other! I hope they reach adulthood without too much psychological damage! It's more about the gov't trying to stick their noses in where the government shouldn't be.

Yes, you are right. It is only fun poking. No cruelty. Kids are not cruel. The playground is a place where all kids are respected by other kids. I am sorry for being so dumb. In case you did not notice, this is sarcasm.

That's just the point. Kids are cruel regardless of what anyone's name is. If a child wants to pick on another kid, having a "normal" name isn't going to stop them. We made fun of kids with perfectly average, ordinary names all the time. Some names just aren't conducive to clever manipulation, but there are infinite ways to be mean to someone.

Could be worse, they might have called him "The Pet Shop Boy"...

There's also a Swedish family trying to name their girl Metallica. That, to me, means the kid will be awesome for the first 8 years or so, and then gradually suck more and more, until you can't stand the sight of them, or the mention of their name.

Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++ Metal Musings - Rex and my new metal blog "I am working on a project that will convert a FORTRAN code to corresponding C++ code.I am not aware of FORTRAN syntax" ( spotted in the C++/CLI forum )

The story was about that family. :)

                The very idea that the government can veto a parents choice of a name is sick. X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X| X|

-- CleaKO The sad part about this instance is that none of the users ever said anything [about the problem]. Pete O`Hanlon Doesn't that just tell you everything you need to know about users?

Yes, it's pretty damn screwed up. :( It's not an offensive name, it's just plain ugly. The only ones who should be able to deny the parents the right is Metallica (the band).

Well, at least it's better than "The Dead Ingrate". :)

No point in giving the bullies a helping hand. There was a much-publicised case in the UK where a couple christened their child Drew Peacock[^].

 Don't get me wrong, it's not a good idea to name your kid things like that, but it's just not Big Brother's place to say.
