So hire a wall paper stripper, and set to it. f*** me, how dull can life get? 3 bloody days later and I have done 2 rooms! One I have painted and put a wood floor down in, at least that one's done. But the other one? Jesus christ, what the f*** did they stick the stuff up with? Araldite? It took for f****ing ever to get the yellow stained filth off the walls.

Bamboo is very pretty but not a real good choice for many people. Its pretty soft and wears quickly. It shows depressions if you have any heavy furniture and it will stain quite easily. If you are looking cheap get a laminate floor and if you are looking for long life and ever increasing good looks go for a solid wood floor - the choice of wood is pretty much determined by your pocketbook and taste. Since it has been determined that FatBoy has no taste ( joking ) it is a matter of how much. When we bought our current home in 2002 it had a laminate floor which we replaced with a wide pine solid wood flooring before we moved in . It has been a good choice for us. Richard

So, moved into new house, and it smells. Like second hand cheap furniture shops smell, you know, like old people, who smoked like chimneys. So hire a wall paper stripper, and set to it. If I never see a steam wall paper stripper for the rest of my life it will be 8 years too soon, thats for sure. The rest of the upstairs (odly, where the lounge, kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom are) I will just paint. We will rip the internal walls out after the downstairs is done so I am only looking for a 2 year temp botch up. Just need to find the ultra cheapest wood floor for the rest of the upstairs, the existing 80's concrete polished 'tile' really is too much to suffer. Ikea here I come!

Act like a boy, stop complaning you sissy! ;-P For the floor, the quickest and cheapest way may be to use linoleum. Some are not that awful. For the furnitures, I would suggest to go to shop like Leroy Merlin, Castorama or Bricomarché. They are generally less expensive, but you will have to compare the prices anyway: following the places, the "price order" of these three shops may vary.

I feel for you on the wall paper front. We only had some borders to take down in a couple of rooms (we didn't have a steamer, we went old school with a metal stripper and some water) but that was enough. We were almost ready to get a divorce over it until we agreed to pay professionals to do it instead. We still have wallpaper in one half bathroom and going down the stairs in to the basement, but we've come to an unspoken agreement to never mention it again. I originally thought this might be about people who call their windows wallpaper their "screen saver". Hate those people!
Ha! The funny thing is, the really bad room I did most of the old method. Scored the hemm out of the paper with the scraper, then threw buckets of soapy water at it for a few hours. It came off a damn site quicker than with the steamer!

Well, running what is effectively a kettle for 3 days must have produced some tonnes of CO2. At the very least it certainly put a shit load of water vapour in the air. Wait till I cut the trees down in the garden, that'll be satisfying. There is something deeply attractive about chainsaws, the tree huggers dont know what they are missing!

Yeah, Casto's pretty good. But we like Bois et Chiffon best, not cheap at all, but very nice. There is one in Avignon. Mind you, its fucking beautiful here, green, blue sky, 25 degrees, food is superb and the local bag in a box is well drinkable! Viva Vaucluse!

sorry, just now saw this. They slice it and compress it under heat.

How long is the expected life time of a bamboo floor compared to regular hard wood floors? If it's 20+ years, then for that price, it sure as hell beats regular wood. It's not like there is a shortage of colors to choose from. The floor in my living room is of the older kind (awful tile design IMO). Would be nice to have it replaced one day...
