bootleg MP3's
-
Out of curiosity, how many of you developers out there feel fine to download MP3's that are bootleg of current albums? I always seem to get my mind twisted with the idea of downloading bootleg MP3's because it somewhat crosses with my belief that you should respect other's work like how others should respect the hard work I did with coding. Then again, when I was in UCLA, it seems that bootleg MP3's are downloaded all the time and it's unusual for a peer not to do it. Any thoughts? Frank Frank@Frank-L.com

I've never downloaded any bootleg MP3's but I'm getting awfully tempted. I recently purchased "Attack of the Clones" soundtrack CD. However it won't play on PC/MAC CD drives. Which is a bit of a bugger really because I don't have a proper CD player, so I've been relgated to using my DVD player as a CD player. Sadly it is no where near my PC so I can't listen to it whilst coding. I'm very tempted to find some MP3 files of the soundtrack just so I can play it on my computer. Michael :-)

Hi Nish, Here's the definition from Britannica.com that I'm using:
bootleg: to produce, reproduce, or distribute illicitly or without authorization In other words, MP3's that do not follow under the personal use guidelines. Copying your own CD's songs for your own use is authorization under personal use. Copying your own songs and spreading them out on the Internet does not go under personal use, therefore is bootlegging. Other than that, you can figure where this topic is going to.;) Frank Frank@Frank-L.com -

A bootleg is something non-official usually. Simon I need your clothes, your boots, and your copy of VS.NET. Sonork ID 100.10024 WHAT, YOU WENT TO THAT MUCH TROUBLE TRYING TO READ THIS? MY GOD, YOU MUST BE EVEN MORE BORED THAN I WAS CREATING IT! I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY HERE. DID YOU PASTE THIS INTO NOTEPAD OR DO YOU HAVE A VERY LOW RES/BIG MONITOR? I'M INTERESTED.
Thanks! Frank posted me a longer definition :-) Nish

Bootleg doesn't always mean illegal mind. In fact, it usually doesn't mean illegal when applied to music. It just means non-official - something a fan has produced and brought out onto the market. If I like something I have downloaded, I go and buy the album. If a friend burns a CD for me and I like it, I will buy the album - I can honestly say that I have no musci in my collection for which the artist hasn't been paid. :) Faith. Believing in something you *know* isn't true.

a) I sometimes do and feel no remorse b) I very often DL a song and decide buing an album of this is not worth it. c) I still buy ca. 2CD/month regulary, 'cause I like the concepts of shopping, unwrapping, opening, putting in and pressing play. d) I DL quite a lot of music I wouldn't pay for. Maybe I would have bought one or other album out of curiosity - but not had I known the music e) I don't mind musicians forced to have a day job.
The earth is not dying. It is being killed.

Michael :-)

I think that since you have a legit copy of your own you're perfectly entitled to do so. :) Andy Metcalfe - Sonardyne International Ltd
