Is anyone else totally sick of the f***ing World Cup? Today is the England-Argentina game and everyone here in the UK seems to have gone mad. I mentioned that I hated the game and hoped England would lose so I could get some respite (:)) and was nearly lynched. Not joking - people were angry with me for daring to voice my opinion. Someone actually said "How can you be so unpatriotic?". That sums it up doesn't it? If I don't root for "Eng-ger-land" then I must be letting my f***ing country down in some way. Tossers. As far as I can see, football often brings out the worst in people - tribalism, jingoism, etc. I f***ing hate it. F*** football. F*** it forever. Especially here where we have so many mindless "fans" who would think nothing of beating the sh*t out of rivals in the name of the "beautiful game". Grrrr. I really, really hope Argentina f*** us up the a***. And Beckhams other foot gets broken.

I share the same stance with regards to football, but I draw the line there - let the people support it if they like, just don't for one moment expect me to be the slightest bit interested what the fucking score is or that "their" team ate for fucking lunch to other night. What I really can't stand is the scores of people wearing St. Georges cross on their faces chanting tribal songs. If I were St. George, I'd know where to stick my lance all right -- right between their fucking cheeks (and I'm not talking about their mouths here). See - look what fucking football even does to those that can't fucking stand the game - it draws out everyones fucking bad side. Fucking Football. What REALLY f***s me off is that here in the UK we are fed the line that displaying the national flag reeks of nationalism, so is a BAD thing - very "un-PC". National Front, BNP, etc. However, soon as the next f***ing England football game comes along, everyone is getting their f***ing faces painted and tying the f***ing cross of St George to their car aerials. F*** them all.

I can understand how you feel. I myself am a latent Middlesbrough supporter. I will watch on TV, but don;t go to games. Football is not the be all or end all. Its just entertainment. The World Cup is just on a different scale. I for one think that you can support any team you want, or not as the case may be. Don't worry, it will all be over in a few weeks. Just like Wimbledon, but only once every 4 years. As for the thugs at football games. I think they should build a special room at each club where they can go beat the sh!t out of each other and leave the real fans alone. Then you can regulate it, and costs come down for the police/community as a whole. Roger Allen Sonork 100.10016 If I had a quote, it would be a very good one.

I'll second the motion, Roger. Calm down, everyone! The anti-football level of excitement is nearly as bad as the behavior of fans at a game... In the US, though it is a different game we call football, we are plagued by this nuisance it seems nearly year-round. I'd love to find a bar where the one thing not allowed on TV is football. Alas, I fear I'm condemned to spend life surrounded by morons who act as if they actually did something to contribute to the game every time their favorite team scores. It is so much more pleasant when the only thing playing on the TV is billiards and beer commercials. "What is it?" and he said, "I don't know. Let's kill it." - Ed Gadziemski

What makes me laugh is the "pundits" (like nearly all my friends) who sit there analyzing every second of the game, screaming at the TV, etc. etc. - none of these people have played a game of footie since the early 70's yet suddenly they know how to manage the national squad. Sad. Sad. Sad. I expect the situation is more relaxed in other countries - but due to the appalling hooligan record of the UK, I hate the game even more. Every time I travel to Europe I am guaranteed to spot a group of pissed up English wankers, "proudly" wearing their team colours whilst making a total nuisance of themseleves. People like that make me ashamed of my nationality.

England: 1 - Argentina: 0. That's the next three weeks for me well and truly buggered :(

There are very few things in England that unite the country, but a football match against an old enemy is one of them. It is part of the human desire to belong and it is very good for the soul to share the ups and downs with other people. It brings people closer together for a few hours. The island mentality that people have in this country really comes to the fore during an England match. The UK has a drink problem, people drink too much, it is part of our culture which is not a good thing. I'm not sure about the xenophobic bit as I've never really experienced that. A wonderful, eloquent speech, David. I agree completely though, people do seem to take it rather seriously. It's a game. It's not war. The loosing team doesn't get a little trophy saying "well done" - so what? Get over it. How the hell can people cry like a baby after their team has lost a football match? And all these dropout fuckwit hooligans who claim to be anti-royalist and then suddenly a football match turns them into patriots. Ugh! Simon I need your clothes, your boots, and your copy of VS.NET.
