Religion

I just visited the soapbox for the first time today & I think its the right place to get some feedback on a question that has often troubled me: I am not a religious man, but when selecting a religion to follow, how do you choose which one is the 'right' one? They seem to be largely mutually exclusive & generally threaten dire punishment for anyone caught following a 'false' one. I would be worried that I had picked badly & despite all my hard work was only making things worse in worshipping a false idol. Is this the sort of issue that religious types wrestle with often, or do most people just take a hope-for-the-best attitude? Any comments gratefully appreciated...
Now this is one of the best forms of trolling I have seen in awhile. Good job, I am sure string and Red will have much to say.
God Bless, Jason

Not in Brazil!:) We're very democratic and inclusive when it comes to religion. Many people here have more than one religion. They embrace, at the same time, Catholicism and Spiritism, Catholicism and Umbanda (a Brazilian version of Santeria, a mix of African paganism and Catholicism), etc. We didn't develop yet any mix including Islam, Judaism and Hinduism. We need more practitioners of these religions.
Of all forms of sexual aberration, the most unnatural is abstinence.

Why are you asking me? That advice is as far as I go ;P For what it's worth... The Mormons that insist on dropping by (often) to chat with me seem to be the most convinced they have the right religion... :)

Yeah, I've chatted to them. Iwas quite drunk at the time but they seemed very enthusiastic. I liked the fact they didn't believe in hell. The worst that could happen was that you wouldn't be able to hang with god if you didn't get to a respectable level of righteousness.

LOL, you need some Mormon repellent. Try telling them that you believe in Polyandry.

Possible questions that you may want to ask yourself:
- Do you believe the religion you are studying/following is truly from your creator, and if so does the original message remain unchanged
- Does the religion you are studying/following call to the worship of other than the Creator
- What proof/sign/evidence do you have that it is true
Things that should NOT be a criteria:
- There is no contradiction between the religion in question and your current lifestyle
- It provides you total seclusion from the materialistic world (often times people in the West choose this route not out of sincere conviction of what they are following is ‘true’, rather it provides them an escape from materialism)
- It is what your parents followed

When they or the Jehovah's Witnesses come by I open the door and ask when I can expect my next issue of Satanic Weekly... Ive only had one try to continue the "Do you know Jesus" spiel.

This assumes that there is a Creator and he is a person and that he has sent a message and that we need to worship it. True Religion, IMHO, is search for truth and happiness including the possibility that there is no Creator.

Thank goodness, I have asked myself the possible questions and am secure in my lack of any religion. I am relieved that I have made the right choice :D

Everyone says you are trolling, but I think it was a perfectly good question as questions go. Of course, once a religious person starts asking themselves that kind of question they are probably near to becoming a non-religious person. People follow the religion they believe is true - they don't actually need to worry about your question because they "know" that they have the correct answer. They wouldn't be following it otherwise. However, this question along with many others considered when I was a teenager caused me to discard Christianity. I think it is only a coincidence, but it amuses me that about the same time I stopped considering myself Christian was about the same time I emerged from my most bad time of my life. (you know, the ages 9 to 20, I was rather miserable) I'm still pissed off now actually that all my praying and church did not help me in that time. I think the recommendation of serious counselling or drugs may have been better advice. If God exists, I am angry at him. Didn't he say he'd help? Apparently not. Yeah, I didn't mean to write that last half, but it sort of just came out. I think I'll leave it. Some people feel they have good reason to not be Christian, just as some people feel they have good reason to not be Christian. People seldom acknowledge this.
