The report, which came in this week's edition of Der Spiegel, fingered the world's largest nation as the source of Internet attacks which have stolen sensitive data from German government ministries. The article described the hallmarks of targeted Trojan-horse programs that have previously attacked -- and likely continue to attack -- companies and government agencies in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, according to computer-security experts.[^] I wonder if China is the only country to cyber-attack

Well heres just a little bit of info for you. We here in Australia don't have government agencies or computers, so these Trojan-horses don't scare us.

What about China wanting to buy one of the 2 hard drive companies? An acquisition like this could undermine existing security.

IBM sold its personal computer division to Lenovo[^] a mainland Chinese company, making it one of the largest suppliers of personal computers. Now consider the possibilities for firmware based mischievous behavior, or worse.

The question is whether the Chinese government, which essentially controls everybody and everything in that police state, is behind such attacks.

Almost all of your hardware components, especially on the cheaper end, for any system already come from china.

-- You have to explain to them [VB coders] what you mean by "typed". their first response is likely to be something like, "Of course my code is typed. Do you think i magically project it onto the screen with the power of my mind?" --- John Simmons / outlaw programmer

oh, I know but this is an acquisition that has worried me since it happened. the worrsome part is that these PCs would be found in defense industries where those industries (as well as agencies) would have been purchasing what they believed to be high-end IBM products.
