By "there was only the new account" I take it you're using the user selection type of login, where you click on a name and enter a password if required? (sorry, I can't think of its proper name at the moment...) I haven't got an XP machine to try this on rigth now, but when you get to this login screen hit Ctrl-Alt Gr-Delete and you should get to the regular login screen where you can enter a user name and password. Now you should be able to put in the Admin account and password.

Me: Can you see the "up" arrow? User:Errr...ummm....no. Me: Can you see an arrow that points upwards? User: Oh yes, I see it now! -Excerpt from a support call taken by me, 08/31/2007

If your new account is an administrator, then you should be able to take ownership of the other user's files using the security tab on the directory's property page, then give your new account access.
