What is it with NASCAR anyway? [modified]

I just don't understand how the most plain and boring of all motorsports attracts such high numbers of fans and revenue in the states. I mean... what is dumber than getting excited for some guys driving their cars that look like boxes in circles for 2 or 3 hours(correct me if I'm wrong here)?? Have Americans even heard of the World Rally Championship? -- modified at 6:50 Monday 24th September, 2007 Let's make it a little more interesting. In the south people count "1.. 2.. DALE... 4.." Kind of an American joke, but NASCAR is pretty damn boring. Auto racing in general is pretty damn boring. Watching NASCAR or F1 ranks right up with watching golf, I'd rather be bludgeoned with a jackhammer than watch either of the three...

I know a guy whose two favorite things to watch on TV are NASCAR and golf. :~

The best way to watch NASCAR is through the highlight films. Personally I love to attend drag racing. The races only last for seconds but what gets me is the power, sound, and feel of when a top fuel dragster takes off. I honestly can not put into words the experience.

Its cause Americans are fat and lazy (Yes, I'm American). If you look at a NASCAR track, you'll notice that you can see the whole thing from a good seat. There is no need to move around to see the whole thing. When you deal with a sport like F1 or WRC, you can only see part of the action at one time. That's my guess anyway. I don't watch it. You could make NASCAR better by taking away the restrictions on the motors, so they can go faster and wreck harder. Hogan

WRC coverage is worlds better than live NASCAR coverage. Helicopter follow shots, modern, trendy music, clean modern graphics. The drivers are often college educated, speak several languages and are real athletes. The cars are far more technically interesting. The scenery is astounding. The fans are insane. Lots of drama, as cars mechanically fail or roll over on the course. Who wants to watch cars do donuts in a parking lot when you can watch them fly through watersplashes in Argentina?

Well, you gotta understand the history of the sport. It started with Moonshine runners out of work after prohibition was repealed. The drivers had to do something so they started racing. I doubt many of today's fans understand why they like it, but I imagine it just evolved from that internal support to the trend we have today. And for the most part it was a sport of the south. It only recently ventured out (last 10 years or so).
This statement was never false.
