After being burgled, I was reminded of this thread[^] that frivolously accused USAA (my insurer) of sexism. I defended them because...well...It's apparently good to be a man. Not only are they replacing all of my items (after all, I do have replacement insurance), they are actually compensating me for what I paid for everything. Keep in mind these were mostly electronics purchased several years ago that have depreciated substantially. Brand new and comparable replacements could be purchased for probably half of what I originally got them for. Not only that, but they decided (for reasons beyond my understanding) to waive my $500 deductible. Among the various things I was instructed to buy and provide receipts for is a brand new XBox 360 and 4 games in order to replace my 1st generation XBox that was stolen. USAA...I love you.

Nice. I know I'd get new item replacement cost from my insurer for several pieces of thrift shop furniture I have. I never specifically asked about electronics though.

New for old is pretty common here: at least I've had it for quite a while: fortunatley never had to use it. Sorry to hear you got buggered. I mean burgled.

          Replace everything with Dell's. Dell's are theft-proof.

That seems to be true. They left my Dell laptop behind.

It is true. What loser would risk prison for a Dell? One would have to be pretty desperate.

Speaking of...They stole two home-built PCs. I'm waiting for emailed details from the adjuster, but she mentioned that she's giving $1400 for both. I'm not sure if that is pending replacement receipts or not, but if it is....I might become an Apple-owner. :-O

Heh. Apple computers aren't all that bad. They're basically BSD machines. I've grown quite attached to this one I'm working on. It's one of those Mac Mini's with a built-in wireless. The screen is an HP w2207. It boots in about 15-20 seconds, never crashes, is fast, speedy and relatively easy to use. That said, there are a few things lacking. The Safari browser needs some work (it obliterates CodeProject and has a few problems with some other websites). However, most of the software is pretty decent, but they are expensive - both in terms of hardware and software. Microsoft has a version of Office for the Mac that's pretty good. As a result, this has become my research machine. The Dell is being used by my wife (it's a little dated now - bought it about 2003). I don't mind the Unix feel to it. I used to use linux boxes alot, so I feel back at home... Apple is like Microsoft - there are advantages and disadvantages. Depends what you want in a machine.

Red, just make sure you have got all warranty documentation from manufacturer and/or supplier and not some insurance docket stating they were supplied by XXXX. I had one of those insurance dockets, and the supplier (who was also the manufacturer) refused to recognize the docket as it was not "official" warranty documentation issued by them and no amount of threats (legal) to both the supplier and insurance company would resolve the problem when the equipment broke down. Eventually, I gave up though weariness and I repaired this stuff myself.

I don't think that's relevant. They wired me most the money and told me to send them receipts after I make purchases to make up the difference. The vendor isn't involved with the insurance company in any way.

I'm sure you hope so. However, I had claim with a similar value about 5 years ago (with my car). My premium was unchanged because USAA rocks.
