1080P makes it future proof right? ;P I thought I read somewhere that even if you had 1080P it wouldn't matter because Halo 3 was only written to 680P or some other odd number. Sadly I haven't researched enough to know what that means but oh well. More P's is always better!

The discussions below are a bit grim, so I'll interupt with a more lighthearted question. Supposing that you were to replace your very antiquated television with one of them fandangled LCD or Plasma thingies. And suppose that your wife, who has absolutely no respect for anything technical, demanded that the television choice based entirely on whether or not the screen was glass (instead of plastic). And suppose that the rational husband wants a 1080p LCD (noting that the Plasmas have glass screens, but LCDs usually do not), but acquiesced and agreed to get a Plasma to satisfy the "glass" requirement. And suppose that a brand new XBox 360 with Halo 3 was connected to this television. Based on personal experience, how necessary would it be to get 1080p vs. 720p given that a 1080p costs about $400 more than a comparable 720p? Sure this sounds a bit "loungy", but whenever I post in the lounge, I'm told to get back into the Soapbox, so just pretend that its primary use would be to watch the 700 Club. *Matthew Faithful: Please note that I'm already aware of the fact that the government uses every other line in a 1080p to hide subliminal messages (and that 720p TVs don't do this). That's why I will only watch it while wearing those 80's miniblind-looking sunglasses so that the subliminal lines are removed. -- modified at 13:13 Monday 15th October, 2007

The display isn't the issue, it's how much 1080p programming is there?

I think it refers to the number of horizontal lines in the resolution. A 1080p TV is 1920x1080. 720p is anything less than that, but can scale the image...or something.

Oh yeah, that's another question. I have cable but no cable box (plugs right into the wall). Will that coaxial cable put out an HD signal? I'm going to have to replace our Tivo with an HDTivo too.

Depends on the size of the screen. If you have a true 1080p source and not an upconverted source and you have at least a 50 inch screen then the result is worth it in my view. But take a look at the screens boasting 120 Hz. They are so lifelike that its freaky. But expect to pay an extra grand or two.

                  This statement was never false.

It's in a bedroom, so I don't want it any bigger than 42". I'm thinking that at that size it won't matter too much* (and there aren't even that many 1080p's in that size). *Since when does size not matter much in the bedroom?

Again depends on your programming. Most cable companies you have to subscribe to the HD package and they'll give you an HD box. If you have dish of some type you'll need an HD receiver too but most of the time you can get this upgrade for free if you say you're ditching them for someone who will give you the HD stuff free. Programming is extra usually though.

Glare on glass, if you live in a cave fine otherwise... nuf said. 1080p in DLP is the best product for the money and they weigh next to nothing but of course you can't wall mount them (easily).

I tried that. However, keep in mind that she is a woman and therefore irrational. The glass is prettier.

This is going to have to be wall-mounted. On a related note, I just ordered a new Panasonic PT-AE1000U 1080p LCD projector for the home theater (on a 119" screen). My old stolen Sony Sony VPL-VW12HT already looked great and this one is supposed to be orders of magnitude better. Now the big decision...HDDVD or Blu-Ray.

Oh yeah, that's another question. I have cable but no cable box (plugs right into the wall). Will that coaxial cable put out an HD signal? I'm going to have to replace our Tivo with an HDTivo too.

Just get an HD Antenna. You should have some local programming in HD.

                                  This statement was never false.

If you're going to be a prat you could at least learn to spell my name. The glasses will suit you well. I hope you make up your mind soon and don't miss any more episodes of Sesame Street. This episode was brought to you by the letter 'L' and the number 2 :laugh:
