Der Leiermann is a song. It the one German song by an English band. I thought it was an interesting coincidence that when I was reading a German post (well, looking at it anyway) that I was also listening to a song in German by a band that normally sings in English. (whew, what a long explanation) "The lives of these people are contingent on events; if things stop happening to them they will stop being."
