Imagine this. IF (Christ* and Mohammed) were NOT born then there'd be no Christians and Muslims on Earth today. Can you even imagine that??? The world would be full of Buddhists, Jews and Hindus. Then again if Buddha wasn't born, it'd be just Hindus and Jews. I donno who started Jews and Hinduism. Nish *I had mistyped this as Chris first :-)

Nishant S wrote: it'd be just Hindus and Jews. Unlikely, there would be something else to replace it. When the time is right and people are ready to accept new religious concept then the great religious systems are propspering, but new religious systems are always present and it's only a matter of the right time and a little bit of luck or coincidence for one of them to grow big.

Hindus and Jews would be a good arena game - monotheism vs polytheism. If we could ever arrange such a contest, I'd appreciate enough warning to get some bets down. Judaism was the first (as far as I know) world religion to embrace the concept of a single God, albeit a God of many faces. Hinduism (to the best of my limited knowledge) still embraces a tripartite Godhead, with a number of demigods responsible for minor duties. I don't have any problem reconciling either belief system with the Bible I read. Sadly, some people do. As a Christian, I believe that our avatar, Jesus, came to us to tell us that acceptance and respect for the belief systems of others was our duty. In answer to your query, Nish, Abraham and His covenant with God, created the Jewish nation. His offspring were His chosen people. I have no idea where Hinduism originates, except for the excellent tale told of Krishna's great battle against evil. In the Bahgvad Gita - I know I spelled that wrong, but I'm at a loss to correct it. It's been a long while since I've studied such things... But it remains one of the greatest tales ever told - I commend it to everyone's reading! I Drowned Schroedinger's Stupid Cat!

Roger Wright wrote: Hinduism (to the best of my limited knowledge) still embraces a tripartite Godhead Actually from what I know of Hinduism, there is one main god called shakthi. Shakthi has three separate existences. The first one is for creation – called Brahma, the 2nd one is called Vishnu [who's the god who handles stuff for people who are alive and then siva – the terminator god. Then here is a pretty complicated hierarchy of sub gods who are basically the staff in the god-department I guess. And Siva and Vishnu have their wives who become powerful cause of their being married to powerful men. Vishnu himself has 12 separate instances. Two of them are Rama and krishna - the most popular Vishnu instances. Nish

Roger Wright wrote: Judaism was the first (as far as I know) world religion to embrace the concept of a single God, Most folk believe that, but there is very strong evidence that they were not the first by a long shot. A lot of religions had a Supreme God and then lower gods similar to angels. Regardz Colin J Davies
