Hydrologists join the Conspiracy

The water shortages gripping the western US are the result of global warming, not natural variations in climate, according to a bleak study by hydrologists. The results suggest that water disputes will plague the region in the future and damage economic growth unless action is taken now, warn researchers.[^]

I remember reading this sort of thing 20 years ago - but the cause then was put down to the huge demands for water by industry, agriculture (and the two combined, of course) and the general population at large. Even then they were predicting water-shortages here (and elsewhere) to be a major problem in this century. A minor example: Pahrump, western Nevada, is in a continuous battle with Las Vegas which wants to incorporate it - the reason being that Pahrump is sitting atop a huge aquifer - water which LV desperately, desperately needs. This is an unpleasant political battle which could get quite nasty in years to come... Still, as we all know ( :) take a deep breath FB...) it isn't "global warming" but "climate change"... so who knows, maybe the deserts and plains of the western and mid- US will see an increase in rain.... Personally, I see the whole thing as a case of "que sera, sera". Neither the scientists nor the politicians of the world are going to agree enough to do anything (even if they could), so I really can't be bothered getting excited about it in advance - we'll just have to deal with whatever happens, when it happens.

Thats what hwappens when everyone wants a swimming pool and a green lawn. Same here in the Vaucluse, probably the same where you are too Karl. Water is expensive, so people drill a well. Today, soe people's wells are 120 meter deep and the local govt is proposing a well tax. But, of course, if these guys put GW in the title of their report, they are guaranteed a 500% increase in funding.

Isn't this just part of the NoCal v SoCal water battle? SoCal wants it, NoCal got it but won't give it up. Yackety-yak.

Are you sure about that? Pahrump is in a different county (Nye) than Las Vegas (Clark). I didn't think a city could incorporate land outside of it's home county. Do you have a reference for that?

Only from conversations with a relative who lives there... I'm no expert on American laws in this matter and may well have it wrong - but there is a battle (of whatever legal status) between the two cities/towns over the water under Pahrump, that much I do know. I know LV has been unsuccessful in it's attempts - whatever they want, they cannot do it without the good citizens of Pahrump agreeing, and so far they have not. Perhaps if they were in the same county, Pahrump would have less say in the matter.

Its ot true for animals and plants, and its not true for man. We are just monkeys with brains, and the desire to be chief, have access to the best, and fuck the tastiest chicks is as inherited from our animal past in exactly the same way as the other 99.6% of our genetic makeup.

You really think that's all that is to it? "Greed and power" surely shape our world. But saying that's all is - in my eyes - just an excuse. We have monkey brains and monkey spines - but we also have a cerebral cortex that can override large parts of the monkey. While you neglect to mention your coworkers contribution to make sure you get the promotion, someone is planting a tree in a public place, because he thinks shade is better than air conditioning, and why not let you have some of it, too? While you are bedding that hot chick, some geek in his filthy basement is digging through obscure formulas because he wants to understand, not because of some grant money. While you tell people you cannot act different from a monkey, someone is hoding the hand of a dying stranger. Do you really believe progress is made through grant money, relationships are based on exciting sex, and the worth of everything is defined by how much money someone would cough up for it? If your goal in life is to be measured by the the size of your bank account and the tit circumference of your chick, enjoy it while it lasts. But when you tell me you had no choice I laugh in your face.

And while there are many exapmples of such compassion and selflessness, it is not individuals like that who shape events. Its is the other sort that run the show, and it is by their actions that society is judged.

I don't think it's a question of right or wrong but of do or don't. Let them run their show, we don't have to stay in the theatre.

Blair took the UK to an illegal and imoral war in Iraq. We, the 80% of the UK who disagreed, didnt join the program. But we still got judged by Blairs actions, and bombs got put on London trains.

I didn't express that very well (quite bad, I would say). I didn't mean to say "just let them do whatever they do", rather "we don't have to accept their values as our own".
