Did they really not get the reference[^] associated with the name? "...the fact that it is tied to a girl's bed - it literally couldn't be worse taste." said the editor of parenting website raisingkids.co.uk.

"Any publicity is good publicity", so the saying goes - and Woolworths have just bagged themselves front page news in every paper in the UK. While some people will condemn them for it, most won't really give a damn, and I'd be willing to bet that their sales do not suffer one jot because of this.

I'm sure it won't harm their sales, I'm just amazed that no-one out of of the many who must have seen and approved the range got the reference.

They no doubt did - but I guess they figured it was worth while running the gauntlet of a few pissed off parents as a trade-off for a shed-load of free publicity.

I'm just amazed that Woolworths still exists. I used to buy baseball cards there growing up... i wonder if there's any connection beyond the name.

Most Spanish-speaking people wouldn't. IIRC, Lolita is still a fairly popular name in their countries. And in those countries with a large hispanic minority like the US. http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Lolita Basically we have the think police at work.

"I expect a company like Woolworths to actually know what it means and the connotations and stuff," (emphasis added) And that's the people that try to pass as educated. :sigh:
