why do people i don't know send programming questions out-of-the-blue, to my personal email addresses? i am happy to answer programming questions here on the forums, but that's because i get to decide on which questions to answer and when i want to answer them. sending questions directly to me replaces both of those choices with this one: do i answer (if i can), or do i tell the person to go stick his head in the oven? people suck -c

Many years ago when Scot Wingo was running the MFC FAQ stuff, I happened to send him an email with a friendly thanks for his efforts. In the early days, it was a much needed resource. Unfortunately, in one of his later releases of the FAQ, he included a couple of my comments, along with my email address. The slew of questions that starting arriving was astronomical. People(?) from all over the world sent me code looking for answers or questions about why windows works the way it works. It was simply ludicrous the stuff that I got. I just ignored it all. Back in those days, I use to get my email using a 9600 baud connection. Thanks god there was no such thing as HTML mail at that time :) Chris

I get this too. What also sucks is when colleagues that you've never met starting sending you "how do you ... in C#"-type questions.  Very tempting to send them on a wild goose chase. :-D Then if you don't have time to answer fully you get sarcastic emails in reply. WTF? :wtf: Chris Losinger wrote: people suck Couldn't agree more. Except on a Friday, everyone's nice then! Chris Losinger wrote: why do people i don't know send programming questions out-of-the-blue, to my personal email addresses? Because you have articles here. It happens to me all the time, too. Chris Losinger wrote: do i answer (if i can), or do i tell the person to go stick his head in the oven? My approach ? If I get an email that is polite and directly on topic for stuff I have written, I'll try to answer. Otherwise I'll often suggest to people politely that if they ask on CP, I will have a go at answering, but others will also have a chance to reply, and possibly answer better than I could. It's probably that you've replied to a post of theirs, which generates the auto-response (which is addressed from your email address). Perhaps months later they have another problem, remember you answered their last question, so reply to that email with a new question, rather than re-posting on codeproject. I personally think all the auto-reply messages should be addressed from someone@codeproject.com rather than from the person who replied -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!
