Crackers at bay ?

As my friend told me bout "Visual Assist", I went for a trial download, and found it pretty useful. But if I use a little brain (not money ;)) , it no longer is a trial-version. I go about searching astalavista.com and make Visual Assist, a full working version. People out there writing wonderful softwares, why don u invent something innovative to keep these crackers at bay ?? Or is it IMPOSSIBLE ?:| :rose:

It's impossible to stop crackers. Any code that's writen to protect software can easily be removed. The best you can do is make it more trouble than it's worth.

Well, if u can make life difficult for crackers, y cant u kill them ? I guess it can be done !! :) But Erik why wud any one hide a functionality/feature in the software, knowing that a cracker is eventually going to bring it out ? :confused: I think this is very foolish. I guess, crackers are let to live because, the percentage of ppl. using the crack for a software is very negligible compared to the ones that buy it legally.

Yes, those that use said cracks are probably a small percentage. Let me put it this way. Locks and Security systems won't stop a professional thief, so does that mean we shouldn't bother locking our valuables up?

What I meant was, why do we keep everything on the show and hide the costly ones ?? ie .. why to put in, all the functionalities of the s/w and disable a few ? ... and call it a shareware/trialware/whatever ?? This is like invinting a thief and telling him that u have somethin valuable!! When u put a s/w for a public show (internet), put in the version that has features showing ONLY, HOW it works!! A bare minimum is enough. And if the user is interested get the payment and ship the product. :rose:

>> that has features showing ONLY, HOW it works!! the above may be possible for a printing s/w ... our comp. does this by putting an eval banner as watermark in the printouts ... but its not that easy in case of other software ... may be things like you can only create ... cant take printouts or ... cant save . But there are lots of tools like visual assist where the full power has to be witnessed only if they enable all of the features. so IMHO ... i think that we need to develop better secure mechanisms to keep the crackers at bay. May be technologies like Biometrics can help achieve this in near future .. Cheers Kannan
