Work / life balance

Just sat through a long meeting about corporate culture and values. I asked exactly what "work/life balance" means. Evidently it means not working long hours.

Work/life balance is an HR/management term meant to imply that you should balance your work hours with time you spend at home. Feck that. They're paying me for 7.5 hours per day, that's what they'll get. You want to work for a company with an Out At 5 culture, not unlimited overtime. Ironically, it's been shown again and again that extended work hours lead to errors that have to be corrected, and the errors and the correction tend to take longer than if you'd worked shorter hours in the first place. There's a reason we've gravitated to an 8-hour work day, and that's because it works for humans. Obviously if it's your company, do what you like.

I suppose they'll want to give you Friday afternoon off (paid) every week to promote this idea? :).

Perhaps the answer to what is "work / life balance" is, "Gee, here I am at the end of my life and I wish I'd spent more time at play." Ironically, as developers, we want our work to be play. The problem is all the bean counters and project managers.
Doing work is the part of our life journey. But still we have the authority to do fun and play.
