the man is an idiot. i can't wait to vote against him, again. -c

To explain Donald Knuth's relevance to computing is like explaining Paul's relevance to the Catholic Church. He isn't God, he isn't the Son of God, but he was sent by God to explain God to the masses.

Yes the USA will never be a Democracy till it can wipe the Electoral College. And I don't think anyone imagines that will ever happen. Regardz Colin J Davies

what really bugs me about it is the idea of winning the Whole State. in most states, the majority of votes wins all the electors, only a few will give electors based on percentage. US government is a total sham. -c

Yes, as with Bush / Gore a Florida voter was more influential then most of the voters in all the other states. Similar stuff with Nixon / Kennedy, I believe. The current system was designed for 200+ yrs ago with 13 states, not for 50 states and modern communications and party politics. Regardz Colin J Davies

Far from being eliminated, it should be rebuilt into the serious authority it was intended to be. We were never intended to be a true democracy, but a constitutional republic with a two tier democratic system - the people vote for electors who than vote for the candidate. The average joe simply does not have the time to become expert on every issue. The notion of an elector is someone with more political sophistication and knowledge, who along with other such people ,would gather to deliberate as a body about the best candidate, and vote accordingly. My one vote would be worth much more if I could cast it for a like minded local individual who could then have a significant say in who ultimately gets elected. We have to get a LOT better when it comes to spoiled ballots if we're gonna dump the Electoral Collage. Naturally, everybody was whining about the spoiled ballots in 4 Florida counties during the last election. Rightfully so! Did you know the city of Chicago had nearly ten times the number of spoiled ballots as the entire state of Florida? Why wasn't there an investigation? Because even if all of the ballots were for Bush it still didn't give him the state. Well, if we dump the Electoral College those kind of failures simple cannot happen. I'm not a huge fan of the Electoral College, but we need to do a MUCH better job of dealing with EVERY ballot if we're gonna do without.

Partial Agreement the US was designed to be a representitive Government not a Democracy. Yes it's too much to expect that every Joe is an expert on every issue, and that is why true Democracy is darn near impossible. However it is my understanding that the USA was never designed to have a Political Party structure. But it was a quick natural progression. The whole Whig party thing was imported from Britain, and the founders never wished that to occur. Anyhow what other duties do the members of the Presidential Electoral College have, To the best of my knowledge, they are just representitive messengers who go to Washington once every four years? (Asking because I don't know) Reverend Stan wrote: My one vote would be worth much more if I could cast it for a like minded local individual who could then have a significant say in who ultimately gets elected. Imagine what would happen if Political Parties dissapeared ? Note: Reverend to the best of my knowledge US Political Parties only became formally legislated organizations last century at the state level. Regardz Colin J Davies

Its strange. I listen to Bush all the time, and I've never heard him make any comments of the sort. It is not surprising that a Washington Post writer would create such nonsense and attribute it to Bush, or that the basically anti-American sentiment of the world community would believe it. I don't care too much for Bush, but if he is smart enough to be a conservative, that is good enough for me. "Human imagination has been sculpted by the universe within which it was born" Hmmmm...
