TrollTech Job Application weirdness !!!
-
I'm looking for a new job, and I just stumbled on the Trolltech/Qt company, and they offer Software Developer positions, but with this requisite : " Note: applications without code example(s) will not be processed. Ideally you should send us a complete small Qt application you are really proud of or a link to an open source project with web CVS you have contributed to. Other code samples will also be accepted, as long as they are complete C/C++ GUI applications on either MS-Windows, MacOSX or Unix. " as seen on their webpage : http://www.trolltech.com/company/careers/oslo.html[^] I think this is stupid, why should I be automatically dismissed as a candidate just because I don't do programming at home or don't have source code that I can send them ?!!?!?! Am I not a good candidate because of that ? doesn't the work I've done and the experience I've gathered good enough for them ?!!? Max who'd never go to norway anyway !!!

Because any real programmer will *always* have their own projects. In order to be good you have to love programming, and if you love it, you do it on your own time also. :)

Wading through job applications is hard. Trying to guess determine who is actually qualified among those who say they are is difficult. QT has an advantage in that their core product is widely available and used; they actually have the potential to hire people who won't have to be trained starting from scratch. It seems likely that they will get a sufficient number of applicants using this approach, though if not i don't doubt they'll open up the application requirements a bit.

Shog9 If I could sleep forever, I could forget about everything...
Most companies only hire about 5% of all applicants. QT obviously is taking advantage of the economy to get the best programmers it possibly can. As we all know, just having a Masters in CS, doesn't mean you are a great programmer. :)

Well, they also clearly state that they are looking for people who "have just finished, or are about to finish, education in the field of computer science". Obviously, they look for someone passionate and someone who likes programming. A person like that will most definately have some source code to send. They don't look for experience, they look for unexperienced, but loving computers person.

You are the intrepid one, always willing to leap into the fray! A serious character flaw, I might add, but entertaining. Said byRoger Wright about me.

Because they want someone who is motivated enough to do some programming, not just read about it ! Elaine :rose: Would you like to meet my teddybear ?

Yes, but how many of us have hobby code that is so flawless that we would want a potential employer to do an actual code review of it? I have tons of personal stuff, but I generally do not consider it to be production quality. It is just stuff I hack on and do all kinds of goofy experimenting with. I'm proud of it, but would be embarressed if someone took a long hard look at every line of it. Some of it would be damned hard to explain. I'm not a real reverend, I just play one on CP.

I suppose you could always find some clever free source code somewhere on the web and *adopt* it. Who's to say that it isn't exactly what you would have written if you'd had the time?:-D "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Recursion." "Recursion who?" "Knock, knock..."

 That would be my luck; I figured out as a kid that I have to play everything straight - I always get caught! "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Recursion." "Recursion who?" "Knock, knock..."
