DataBinding SLOW

Hi all. I have a slight problem on a project I'm working on. The way things are structured is: I have a master page (obviously with the placeholder for the children). I have the placeholder surrounded by an ajax update panel (this was the only work around for a problem we had). Now the children pages all bind their drop downs with tables from an MDB. The problem? Some pages (even though some have like only three drop downs) take AGES to bind. And even more when a button is clicked (this shouldn't post back as it's in an update panel right?). I don't see why this is happening in only particular pages. Sometimes, a very short page takes 10-20 seconds to respond to a click, whilst much larger pages respond instantly. What could be the problem? I'm blocked.
