I'd be happy if it just stopped them printing anything moronic.

That would stop them printing. Which would be fine too.

Original Post[^] This really pisses me off :/ These ignorant fools (the commentors on the newspaper website) have the gall to only read tabloid newspapers then complain about these projects that threaten the world being kept secret. If your going to read shit like that then you can expect two things, first a project as massive as this thats being done for the furthering of man kind won't be mentioned, it doesn't sell, second if theres anyway to spin it into a doomsday machine then they'll jump all over it. The problem here is not doomsday machines being kept secret, it's people being stupid ignorant fucks. If you watched science documentaries, if you read technology/science news sources you would have heard about all this a long time ago, and you'd have heard how there is an extremely small amount of risk. (Sorry thats a bit more aggressive and offencive than my usual posts, but I think it conveys me thoughts and feels on this matter with some clarity.) That said I still feel sorry for that poor girl, she was obviously not very reasonable or stable and my condolences go to all those who's lives were enriched by her time here. EDIT: Added link to original article. Clarified that I'm not talking about the OP on CP :P

      Original Article:

They dismissed as 'pure fiction' doomsday predictions that the experiment could create anti-matter, or black holes.

It creates anti-matter all the time. The concept of mini-black holes is pure speculation, and weak at that. I've waited 15 years since I first heard about LHC to see what it does to further particle physics, and the day it finally comes on line, the best the 'news' can do is babble about mini-black holes and the end of the world. Pitiful. But I can't help but wonder, what the hell is going on in India? A couple of weeks ago there's a post about hundreds (or thousands, I don't remember) hospitalized because they went completely blind staring at the sun trying to see the Virgin Mary, and now this. But I guess I can't fault the Indian population for being ignorant of quantum mechanics when 99% of the American population has no better understanding of science. So much for humans being the 'thinking beast.'

Yes, and look, the world is still here  Same thing is going to happen on Dec. 22nd, 2012, the day after the Mayan Calendar ends.

Have you ever taken a look in the ASP.NET forums around 10:00PM Pacific Time/1:00AM Eastern Time? The forum gets loaded with all kinds of incomprehensible posts.

I would love to see CERN take the Daily Mail, etc to court for libel. That would encourage them to check the facts. But, at the end of the day, I suppose you can't account for idiots

I've noticed some of that in the C# forum. I don't spend much time in the ASP forum. But honestly, after spending time in the SoapBox, I feel like I have to wear kid gloves in the other forums anymore.

Yesterday I was thinking it would be nice if these sources of miss information could be prosecuted for any deaths caused. But having had more time to mull it over that wouldn't be feasible as then all new sources wouldn't be able to print anything controversial.

The problem is not with those who print the idiocy, it's with those who read and believe the idiocy.

I think it lies with both. The readers are at fault for being open to such crap, they should know better. But the papers should also have moral obligation to produce the the best quality of information they can rather than the best sales they can.

Yes, both the C# and ASP.NET forums get flooded with garbage questions. A lot of them are just a single google search away.

You need to see the Indian Baby Toss Ritual to understand just how wierd they can get Oopsie Daisey Baby In the Indian village of Solapur, residents mark the birth of a new child by tossing the newborn from a 50 foot Muslim shrine onto a sheet below. The bizarre tradition is over 500 years old.

I agree. Anything that can be done to drain the shallow end of the gene pool should be encouraged. It's a shame only one numbskull was encouraged to self-destruct.
