John McCain is attempting to mount a Sarkozy-style "second-stage" succession to a Republican Party that has also come to be seen as disgraced and out-of-touch.^ "The picture is much bleaker for Obama in winning an electoral college majority in which so many states are dominated by rural issues and cultural concerns (like prayer and guns) alien to the sensibilities of an urban liberal."

I think the BBC's overstating its case here slightly. Recent polling at the per state level shows obama with a slight lead in the electoral vote count (although still dependent on states within the margin of error). While McCain's managed to wear away Obama's 80-100ish vote lead just before the conventions except for very briefly he's never held it himself.

Another late October surprise: Chavez starting a nuclear program in co-operation with Russia, as well as a military alliance.

The BBC may regard the U.S. as more 'dominated by rural issues and cultural concerns' than it actually is.

Who really cares about polls? In my near 20 years of voting, I've never paid any real attention to the polls.

If so, it's a good reason to vote for Obama

There is only one poll that counts. The other polls are just weather-vaning.

Yep. The one in November, when all voters are counted for.
