Microsoft: Bad things happen to firms that use (unlicensed) Windows
-
According to a report in Computerworld, companies that use pirate copies of Windows suffer a hell of a lot more system failures and data losses than those with licences copies. Is this an admission by Microsoft that their products are so badly coded & unreliable that you absolutely have to have all the latest patches & SPs and technical support just to survive? http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=printArticleBasic&taxonomyName=Windows&articleId=9115901&taxonomyId=125

Could just be that companies that are too cheap to buy legal software are too cheap to properly maintain the hardware they have and life cycle it before it fails. Correlation does not imply causation.
Today's lesson is brought to you by the word "niggardly". Remember kids, don't attribute to racism what can be explained by Scandinavian language roots. -- Robert Royall

When working for a client a while back they hired in a "Server Engineer" to install and configure Windows 2k3 Server. The box seemed to be running alright for about a month, then all the figures for their till system went screwy. We found that even though he was given a legitimate copy to install he used his own "cracked" version anyway because "*shrug* it was easier". The crack worked by resetting the date each month so the trial period never ended. Anyway I don't think he did it after that because he was charged back his fee in full, plus the cost of two very expensive developers at their hourly rate to come in and set it right. Those 5 minutes he saved ended up costing him in excess of £2k. That was slightly off topic :P but the moral of the story is, you don't know whats gonna get screwed up by the hacky workarounds these pirated versions use. EDIT Oh wait, we're in the soap box here ... just imagine I'm swearing all over this post :P
