I was throwing up til 4:30 this morning so feeling very tire and off form a bit. 10 Begin Rant Get up to phone the doctors. Long story short I sent in a repeat prescription for 7 items I get three of them on the prescription 2 of them twice. I ask where the other 4 items are to be told that I can only order them on a specific date. I ask what happens if I ever get ill on the specific date. No answer. I point out that there is no time for me to reorder things as I can go longer without food than I can without those specific drugs. They say phone back this afternoon. 20 Goto 10 Still this is funny http://xkcd.com/[^]

Sounds like Winter Vomiting Virus, in which case there is no point taking any medication, you will either recover from it in a few days, or recover from it in a week, regardless of what you take. I would suggest no food at all!

And some folks wonder why the US isn't eager to install a UK-style health plan.

Not all is unwell in the UK Health Service. As with all health systems around this world, it has its good points and its bad. There are horror stories just like there are good news stories, but, it works reasonably well for most of its users.
As much as the health system here is criticized, mainly from inside, I never had problems with it myself (although that may not hold true in the future, when I am older).

Actually for the last 18 years there's been remarkably few problems. The prescription problems I'm having at the moment are caused by some snotty kid of a doctor with a huge power complex bug up her ass about how important she is. Of course in a way its my own fault because the first time she tried to throw her weight around she wanted me to have regular tests to see if I still needed one of the drugs I was on. I pointed out that as she is told what to prescribe by the hospital if she has a problem with the prescriptions she can take it up with them. I dont know how it works in the us but here the medical profession is strictly hierarchical and she is just about qualified to make my doctors a cup of tea. So needless to say no calls to the hospital were made but now I tend to have problems getting my prescriptions written.

I'm certainly not going to claim that the US health care system is perfect. We've got our share of burecracy and incompetence, too. All I was doing was reacting to the image that is sometimes presented: that the UK's (or Canada's) health care system is perfect.

Just my 2cents, but what she is suggesting (stepping down the drugs and monitoring for relapse) is the standard of care for GERD aka gastroesophageal reflux disease (which i assume is what you have from your description). There are serious side effects associated with the necessary long-term use of the gastric acid inhibitors (eg prilosec, zantac) so it's in your best interest to find the absolute lowest maintenance dose you can get away with. And if she's essentially your gatekeeper physician (i.e. family doc? primary provider?), then it's likely completely within her realm of knowledge and duty to manage GERD.
