It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag. If you can read this message thank a teacher; if you are reading it in English of your own free will, thank a soldier. ~ Charles M. Province

Well said! And as an Ex Soldier, I wholeheartedly agree.

Indeed, I do thank them, and the teachers and parents who brought up such men, of who's like we now have so few. It is a good day to remember not only the soldiers who have died to gain our freedom but also the civillians who sacrificied, toiled and died for a better world especially through the first half of 20th Century. Even more than that it reminds me of the responsibility we all have to preserve what they have won for us.

Nope, wrong. The soldier is only the muscle for a higher mind. It was that higher mind that gave us freedom. Descartes, et al.
Morality is indistinguishable from social proscription
There were soldiers and freedom long before there was a Descartes. And if you knew history, you'd discover that many of the greatest philosophers of ancient Greece had been soldiers and fought for their state in their youth. Indeed. Even Descartes was a graduate of a military academy who became a soldier in the army of Bohemia from 1619-1620.

It is not surprising you have no respect for the Soldiers. Quick, Le Drapeau Blanc! The French folded quicker than a man with a nine high in every war they fought. The White Cross on the White Field. The Brits have had to go to France twice in the 20th Century to kick the Germans out. So take your trite, offensive attitude and stuff it into a history book!

That is the first time I've ever seen politicians referred to as 'a higher mind'.

Aw, man. I had to vote you a 5.

The French did not 'fold' in WW1. Dunkirk ring any bells? The Allied forces that kicked the Germans out in WW2, not the British.

Ah, soldiers dont start wars but soldiers did start freedom of the press, freedom of speach, and democracy? Horse crap. Soldiers are just hired muscle. Hired by what ever tyrant or idealist happens to be in vogue.

Actually, I am English, and I have a lot of friends in the Army, UK army that is, Paras, 49 Comando, Signals, D&D's. I just dont have any respect for Oakmans sentimental simplicity, especially as he chooses today to foist tit on us in a lame attempt to gain popularity. I am surprised it isnt as obvious to you what he is playing at. And he is wrong.

I actually quite like germany and germans. Much preferable to many english people I know. So in what way did 6 million dead achieve and why shold I remember them? Fact is you are being fed a lie. You, the dead, the army, are all there to serve the establishment, and you are fed lies to keep you thinking they serve you. They dont. They serve your masters, not you. If you want graphic proof of this look at the way the police arrested the ex prisoners of the japanese who protested when the japanese emperor came to london. Not only is protest legal in the UK, these ex-prisoners of war were treated badly by the japanese. But the UK govetnment sent out the message and th epolice, who also act as hired muscle, carried out the governments wishes. You are nothing to these people, they just uses, and abuse you and dont give a good god damn about you.

That became obvious when you said you wished they'd won WWI - I wonder, did you think they'd fight without soldiers?

Probably true in France. It certainly was true in Germany during WWI and WWII.

clue: police != soldiers. I imagine it is a distinction too fine for you to make, but it exists, nonetheless.

You are still talking about soldiers? No. I thought not. Is that A.D.D?
