And keystone cops? ;) Anybody who ignores Brazil, at the least, is kidding themselves. I may have been more critical of it than you felt comfortable with at times, but in many ways it may be the last best hope of the western hemisphere. That said, President Lula either doesn't translate well, or has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth. Someone should tell him that there are far more important reasons why Obama was elected than his skin color.

On good side, hear from time to time about how well Chili and Costa Rica are doing (is it true?), one of my cow-orkers here's mother retired to Costa Rica and he is planning to retire there himself (might have to check it out myself, on some vacation). On the negative side hear constantly hear about drug wars and government corruption in Mexico. Don't hear too much about Argintina.

Chile is a more interesting story. Their economy is getting diversified (natural resources, services, etc.), not growing just in one sector. Costa Rica is more in the tourism area but are doing nice, too.

I wouldn't worry too much. That sort of grab is about the only thing I could see that would actually route the dems from power as quickly as the most overly optimistic reps are predicting. My guess is it'll take until the middle of the next decade before a combination of victory disease and everything's the fault of the people in charge triggers a change results in another flip flop.

My guess is it'll take until the middle of the next decade before a combination of victory disease and everything's the fault of the people in charge triggers a change results in another flip flop.

My assumption is that "We'll give back your stolen money" would be the core of the platform the Reps would win their takeover landslide on. If you want to be really paranoid, take your money out now accepting the tax hit (the bad market conditions will actually work in your favor here) and redeposit it in an offshore institution.

I suspect this crisis was generated to facilitate a change in leadership (yes my tin foil hat is on). That being said, I suspect all will be rainbows and gum drops after January 21st, the skies will be bluer, the air cleaner, and even the dog sh*t on the lawn will smell wonderful. I suspect a marginal recovery, so I won't pull it out just yet. However, I am one of the un-patriotic that have diverted a portion of my monthly 401k contributions to paying off the mortgage (couple hundred a month), just on the suspicion that this bail debt thing will get out of hand. And the damndest thing is, if I think this way then thousands probably do as well and are planning accordingly, thus impacting the economy negatively, this because the government meddling adds uncertainty.
