So my Gadsden [^]flag arrived today. I was going to fly it on inauguration day. My wife said after I opened the box with flag in it. You will not fly that fucking flag; they will burn our fucking house down. My wife is a pragmatist and former liberal socialist democrat... however she has changed over 12 years of marriage and three children. Should I fly it or should I not?

You should fly it. Many people don't know what it even is. There only comment will be about its primary color.

I say fly it. I mean, if you want to, and if it's not a symbol of anything bad ( I just read up on it, on wikipedia ), then why would it upset people ? I am confused. If it was a confederate flag and some people would assume it meant racism, then I'd understand.

It would be kind of a gutsy move, but yeah, you've gone this far, run the thing up the flag pole and see what happens. The worst thing will be that your neighborhood will think you're a nut, but maybe you will start a trend. I might put one up of my own, (of course, I'll need a flag pole first)

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

For the culturally deprived, would you mind explaining why it would be a gutsy move? The Wikipedia entry doesn't suggest it is any big deal --- even the West Wing's Sam Seaborn (the Rob Lowe character) had it in his office. Or is it just that flying anything other than an American flag is considered unpatriotic?

Yep, Insanity is hereditary, you inherit it from your kids, or at least I did. There is nothing wrong with flying that flag. Every ship in the U.S. Navy has flown it since September 11, 2002. But don't make the mistake of thinking that it is the flag of the United States of America or treating it as if it is (Don't fly it above Old Glory, for instance, or above the flag of any State.) My guess is you are as likely to be challenged by nutjobs on the right for flying it, as nutjobs on the left. There are plenty of folks from both sides who think the government's job is to tell you what to do - for your own good, of course.

It would just stand out as an obvious political point of view. Which is perfectly ok, but the odds of being considered a complete wacko (you know, the way people like me who have any kind of disagreement with the modern liberal agenda get treated) are pretty high. His neighbors will probably think he belongs to some hate grop of some kind. All Americans understand that flag was our original statment of rebillion against dictatorial tyranny. It is entirely appropriate it be flown now. But being the leader of such a movement always takes courage.

I agree that the flag in itself is not a big deal, but I think most people have an opinion about it that is not based on fact. I don't fly the Israel flag on those national holidays because I know people will misunderstand it. It only takes one nutter to burn your house.
